SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 732,717, dated July 7, 1903. Application led January 30, 1903. Serial No. 141,138. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, EUGENE M. DAVIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Alton, in the county of Madison and State of Illinois,

have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Orders-Out Books, of which the following is a specification.

My invention has for its object to provide an orders-out book designed to take the place of a ledger with regard to firm4 accounts, freight, drayage, and discount accounts on any order given. This object I accomplish by the construction shown in the accompany-` ing drawings, in which- Figure l shows a plan of my improved book open with the two severable sheets turned over to the right to show the ruling of the left-hand permanent sheet. Fig. 2 is a similar view with the two severable sheets turned over upon the left-hand permanent sheet and having interposed sheets of carbon and also showing the supplemental order and receiving slips. Fig. 3 is a detail View of the supplemental order and receiving slips in tablet form.

A designates the permanent order-record page, B the permanent settlement page, and C D the two intermediate auxiliary severable-record pages. The pages are thus made up in groups of four, and in such groups are placed in a suitable temporary binder, (not shown,) so that'the dead pages may be removed from time to time, as will be readily understood.

The permanent pages A B are formedof the usual heavy ledger-paper, while the two intermediate sheets vare'of thin tough paper suitable for use with the carbon-paper E, as will be presently described.

The permanent order-record sheet A is headed Orders andV Order articles, Invoice and Ledgen Under the heading Order articles'the page is ruled into columns headed Date, Number, No. of pieces, andV Descriptiom while under the word Invoice is a column headed Amount and under the Word Ledger a column headed Charge to account of.

spaces are marked Balancesand Date, as shown in Fig. l.

The leaves C D are perforated vertically near their inner edges, so as to :be readily torn in that direction, while in an opposite direction the tear or severance is efected by means of a ruler or paper-cutter. The rulingson these leaves C D correspond to those on the pageA, so that when the sheets C D are folded over upon pageA with the carbone interposed an order Written upon the uppermost page D will be duplicated also'upon page C and also upon the' permanent page A, as shown in the drawings. The permanent page B is headed Out, Debits, B/L or Bills of lading, Discount, Receiving, Drayage, Fr-eight. Under the Word Debits are columns headed Date, Paid by, Amount; under the B/L, a column headed Date;under Discount, a col umn headed For cash; under Receiving, columns headed Date received, Contents checked by, 0. Kd for price byg under Drayage, columns headed Amount and Date paid, and under Freight columns headed Amount and Datepaid. The rulings on the leaves C D also correspond to andcoincide with the headings Date, Number, Issued to, No. Pcs, and Description, and Check here columns on supplemental Y Order and Receiving slips FG made up inftablet Iform in alternate order. Checked by-a--f As will be seen by referring to-Fig. 2, two orders have been entered numbered l and 2.

Order No. l has been torn from the severable leaves C D and pasted upon the respective order and receiving slips, While the triplicate of the said No. l order appears on the permanent page A. Account No. 2 has not been so transferred to the slips F G.

In Fig. 2 page B shows the Out side of the order No. l checked up from the receiving-slip G, dac.

The mode ot' operation is as follows: Then goods are to be ordered, enter on the pages A C D, as before described, then tear off the orders from pages C D, and paste them upon the slips F G. The order-slip F will now be mailed to the firm which is to fill the order,

and the receiving-slip G will be sent to your receiving clerk. When goods are received and checked by receiving clerk, he returns it to office and bookkeeper shows date received in proper place in the book opposite the proper order-number.

In tearing ont the orders for pasting on auxiliary slips tear along perforated line and crosswise, using ruler. Number the next order consecutively on the first full line remaining at top of portion of slip remaining in book.

IVhen invoice is received, check with order and place total amount in proper place under column headed Articles, Amount In column headed Ledger show what account the consignment is to be charged to,

dac. This is all the posting to ledger' necessary. In columnheadec Debits show how paid, amount, and date. In column headed Bills of lading or B/L enter the date of same. In column headed Discount show amount deducted from face of invoices for cash. In column headed Receiving post from the receiving-slip the date received, dac., as specified. In columns headed Drayage and Freight post amounts and date paid from freight-bills and dray-tickets. In posting to this book post periodically, having a sticker-file foreach class of papers. In the place at bottom marked Balances show amount of footings at different dates, and when footngs of Ledger column and Debits and Discounts columns balance the account is closed and page dead. Carry forward the footings of all columns.

The advantages of this system are: It saves much posting, dmc. Bills can be paid without making out an alphabetical list of same where they are paid once a month. Bills cannot be paid a second time even if unmarked duplicate is received, and freight and drayage cannot be paid a second time without the error being discovered. Order entry is saved in ledger. Current and unpaid bills are the only alive accounts with regard to any orders given out. All papers are handled less and with more certainty than by other methods. An alphabetical index of names and orders can be kept up to date by office boy.

I claim for this system the advantages of a system for handling and keeping records of orders out with less work than the methods commonly employed, and the arrangement of the. different pages and papers with regard to ruling, placing in position, andA shifting about to suit requirements, the special ruling on all papers, column arrangement, duc., and the special arrangement of the auxiliary orderand receiving slips, which are so arranged that order can be torn from book and pasted on so as to read the same as original entry left in orders-out book, with such additions as are necessary to the special requirements of order and receiving slips.

The footings of the column headed Invoice are the different firm credits and balance the debits of the different accounts, such as merchandise, expense, advertising, te.

Footings of the columns headed Debit and Discountare the different firm debits and balance cash, dac.

Freight and drayage debits balance cash.

Various footings should be closed and the total posted to ledger monthly.

What I claim isl. In abook of the character described, the i combination with two facing pages containing respectively columns headed for the orders to be filled and for the filled orders, of two interposed sheets between the first-named pages and lined to agree with the first'named page so that when folded over thereon with interposed carbon-sheets the written matter will appear on all three, and the auxiliary order and receiving slipshaving blank portions to receive the orders severed from said two interposed sheets and provided with proper headings for their respective uses, substantially as described.

A book of the character described comprising two facing pagescontaining columns headed for the orders to be filled and for the filled orders, two interposed sheets of less length than the first two and ruled to coincide with the column-rulings of the first page so that when folded over upon said first page with interposed sheets ot carbons the order written will appear on all three, and auxiliary order and receiving slips to receive the orders severed from said two interposed sheets and headed to correspond to the column-headings of the rst page.

A book of the character described comprising a page for merchandise ordered and having columns headed Date, Number, Issued to, No. of pieces, Description, Invoice-amount and Ledger-charge to account of, a second page with columns headed Debits, Date, Paid by and Amount-B/L-date, Discount for cash, Receiving, Date recd, Contents checked by, O. Kd for price by, Drayage-amount, date paid, Freight-amount, date paid,7 two thinner intermediate sheets ruled to correspond with the columns of the IOU IIO
