Be it known that I, DAMAS M. CHAMBER- LAND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Minneapolis, in the county ofHennepin and State of Minnesota, have-invented new and useful Improvements in Clothes-Line Hooks and Elevators,of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to a clothes-line hook and elevator; and the primary object of the same is to provide a simple and effective device of this class to which a clothes-line may be reliably fastened and elevated as desired to support the articles of clothing held by the line at a suitable distance above the ground- The numerall designates a support, which may be a post of a fence or an individual post set up in the ground and suitably anchored to render the same rigid. Extending outwardly from the said post are brackets 2, in which a rod or cylindrical bar 3 of any suitable lengthjis mounted, the terminals 4 of said bar being reduced and capable of rotation in the horizontal members of the bracket. The rod or bar 3 may be of any suitable length, and mounted thereon for free adjustment is a clothes-line hook 5, having at the outer terminal upper inwardly-projecting barbs 6, two of the barbs being shown in the present instance to accommodate the application of a clothes-line at different distances from the rod or" bar 3 as necessity or convenience may demand. The body of the hook 5 is inclined upwardly toward its free terminal, and at the inner extremity is a shouldered extension 7, having an opening 8 therethrough disposed at an outward angle of inclination and of substantially equal diameter throughout its entire length, the said opening being larger in diameter than the diameter of the rod or bar 3, which passes therethrough. Depending below the extension 7 atian inward angle of inclination is a rigid biting-jaw 9, having the rear wall formed with a concaved groove 10, running to a lower biting edge 11.

The clothes-line is caught around either one of the barbs-6, and the hook is elevated or lowered to the proper or required height by first disposing the opening 8 in parallel relation to the rod or bar 3 and while in such position pushing the said hook upwardly or downwardly in accordance with the line of elevation desired,the downward sliding movement of the hook being permitted under such circumstances in view of the disengagement y from the rod or bar-'3 of the lower sharpened edge 11 at the terminal of the groove 10. When the hook has been elevated as desired,

it is released and the downward pressure thereon exerted by the weight of the line, as well as the clothes on the latter, causes the rigid jaw 9 to be forced downwardly and inwardly and brings the lower sharpened edge 11 of the jaw in firm contact with the rod or bar, and at the same time the opening Sis disposed in inclined relation to said rod or bar to bring the sharpened edge 11 of the hook in engagement with the latter, and thereby the hook is prevented from accidentally slipping out of or away from its adjusted position. The greater the weight imposed or placed upon the line the greater will be the resistance to displacement of the hook, and
