JOHN O. STINCHCOMB AND J OHN DANNER,.OF CANTON, OHIO.
HAT AND CLOTHES HOOK.
SPEGIFICATION'forming part of Letters Patent No. 532,109, dated January 8, 1895. Application filed November 20, 1893. Serial No. 491,398- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, JOHN O. STINCHOOMB and JOHN DANNER, citizens of the United States, and residents of Canton, county of "Stark, State of Ohio, have invented a new coat and hat hooks which are formed from a single piece of wire. I
The invention has for its object, to provide the hook with a base, by which it is secured in position, and at the same time be braced from strain to which they are subjected when heavy articles of apparel are hung on them. Furthermore, to provide a device of this character which shall be simple of construction, durable in use and comparatively inexpensive of production.
- With these objects in view, the invention consists of certain features of construction and combination of parts, which will be hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, in which like letters of reference denote corresponding parts in the several views, Figure 1,is a view in perspective of our improved hat and coat hook, from right hand front. Fig. 2, is a similar view from rear left hand; Fig. 3, a side elevation of the base as secured to a support, and Fig. 4, a perspective of the base.
Referring to Fig. 2 of the drawings, the two hooks A and B, and the body 0, are made from a single piece of wire, secured to a supporting base D. The upper hook A is formed substantially as shown, the parallel branches at (1, extending horizontally out a distance, and at about right angles from the base des ignated as b at which point the branches are bent outwardly at a right angle to the branches a distance to a point designated as c, which points are connected by a bowed or arched portion d, vertically or thereabout over that portion of the wire between the points designated as b c. The object of this right portions 0, O, which are secured to the base by lugs as hereinafter described.
The base D is formed substantiallyas shown in Fig. 4, having a vertical or body-portion Z, and a forwardly and upwardly projected brace m, side flanges n, having on their edges spurs 0, and'from the body portion, outwardly projected lugs as p. The web portion and the ends of the body are curved, as shown-at said curvature serving to hold the wires against the flanged portion of the body. At a point about central to the body is provided an aperture r for a supporting screw.
The wire when formed as shown and here inbefore described, is placed on the base D between the lugs p and the side flanges n, the branches resting on and supported by the outwardly and upwardly projected brace'portion m, and are secured in position by the lugs p, bent down over and upon the wire as shown.
In use the hook is secured to a wall or other support by a screw, the spurs 0 drawn into the support as shown by the dotted line.
It will be seen that when in position the tendency to bend the hat hook'A is entirely by the angular portion of the base, which serves two functions: namely, the bracing of the hook A and the means for connecting the ends of the wire, from which the hook is formed. The hook A is preferably extended laterally, and is of loop form, which will prevent the tearing of a coat when hung thereon, or the stretching of the same, which is objectionable in many hooks, having pointed ends.
-From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the operation and advantages of the invention will be readily understood without requiring further explanation. The device is both simple and strong, and can be placed upon the market at such a price as to be within reach of all.
Having thus described our invention, we
claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent In combination with a hat and coat hook consisting in a single piece of wire formed hole, and a screw by means of which the plate into vertical branches 0 0 parallel inclined is secured to asupport and prevented turning,
branches at a, laterally extended branches 1) a substantially as herein described.
