SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 731,557, dated June 23, 1903. Application filed, May 31, 1902.- $erial No- 109,817. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE J. FANNER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Fruit-Presses; and I do herebydeclare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to hand-presses of that type designed for pressing fruits, berries, and the like or for mashing certain kinds of vegetables, the same comprising a perforated cup, a plungerworking within the cup, and a framework for retaining the cup and operating the plunger within the same.
My invention consists in the peculiar construction of the pivotal portion of the plunger or lever in its connection with the cup-supporting ring in combination with the plunger and its manner of attachment to its operating-lever, the object being to decrease the cost of the article on account of the simplicity of the assemblage of the parts and to provide a pivotal support which readily gives to unequal strain and which prevents the cramping of the plunger within the cup and guides the same within the cup, so that the plunger is approximately horizontal in relation to the material at all times from the beginning of its stroke to the end of the same.
In the drawings,Figure Iis a viewin side elevation of a press constructed according to my invention, illustrating the same when the plunger is elevated and when the same is depressed and also showing the pivotal attachment between the cup-supporting ring and the plungerlever. Fig. II is a segmental view showing the plunger-lever thrown back with the plunger removed from the cup so as I to allow of the charging of the cup or the removal of the same. Fig. III is a plan view of the cup-supporting ring with handle removed, the same being partly broken to illustrate the cup-locking lugs. Fig. IV isaplan view, segmental, illustrating the position of the lever when thrown back and the stop for holding the lever when thrown back.
A represents a ring, which is provided at one side with a'handle A. This ring A is jections b 1), formed on or struck out from the cup B at a distance below its upper end sufficient to receive the ring A. The cup B is provided with a heading B, preferably wire-filled, which forms an annular flange at the upper end of the cup B, whereby the cup B is supported against the pressure exerted upon it through the plunger. Thus it will be seen that in order to remove or replace the cup B from or within the ring A it is necessary to register the projection 12 b with the recesses a a, which allows of the withdrawal of the cup from the ring or the placing of the cup Within the ring, in which latter case the cup is given a partial turn, thus locking it in position within the ring.
Projecting horizontally from the ring A and at a point opposite the handle A are two lugs or projections O O, which form the base of the pivotal connection between the plungerlever and the ring A. The lugs or projections C C are each provided with elongated slots 0, (see Figs. I andIL) into which fit the respective sides of a pintle d, as at cl d the said pintle forming the fulcrum of the lever D and being'secured to the said lever at its inner end portion. This pintle (1 slides in the slots 0 and adjusts itself Within the same backward or forward, accordingly as the lever D is raised or lowered at its outer or free end. i
E represents a plunger-rod, which is pivotally connected, as ate, to the lever D. The lower end of theplunger-rod E is provided with a rigid plunger-plate G of such diame ter as to fit snugly within the cup B. It is essential that this plunger-plate G be removed from the cup B for the purpose of charging the said cup and removing the same from the ring A, and hence it is requisite that the plunger when removed shall be clear of the cup to allow of easy access to the same for charging or for removing the same, and for this purpose it is necessary that the fulcrum portion or pivotal portion between the lugs O C and the lever D shall be constructed or designed so that the plunger G shall in rising or lowering be practically parallel on its lower face at all points with the base of the cup and shall not either in rising or lowering deviate to any extent from such position during the entire upward or downward movement; also, that when the plunger is removed from the cup B it shall clear the said cup, as suggested in Fig. II, and it is for this purpose that I have devised the slotted ways 0, which codperate with the pintle, as at 01 (P, which allows the said pintle to slide backward when the plunger is being depressed and to slide forward toward the cup when the plunger is raised. This sliding backward and forward of this pivotal connection or fulcrum-point prevents the cram ping of the plunger Within the cup and keeps the said plunger parallel with the bottom of the cup, allowing the material to be compressed evenly and allows the plunger to be clear of the cup when removed from the same. Also by forming the lugs O C with elongated slots I obviate the necessity of jig drilling or fitting of the parts and provide a fulcrumed or pintle rest which adapts itself at all times to the position of the plunger, allowing the plunger to enter freely into the cup and the fulcrum-point to adjust itself to the position of said plunger as it is being depressed or raised by the lever B. At their outer ends the lugs O O are provided with the cross-bar C so located as to support the lever end when the same is in position illus trated in Fig. II. This cross-bar C also acts as a rest or abutment for a cam-shaped projection D on the pivotal end of the lever D, the function of the cam D being to. throw the lever toward the cup B as the same is being raised, thus keeping the plunger G parallel within said cup.
WVhat I claim is 1. A press of the type set forth, comprising the pivotally-attached handles, a supportingring carried by one of the handles, slotted lugs carried by said ring, a cross-bar carried by said slotted lugs, a cup carried by the ring, a pintle carried by the other handle, to operate in the slots in said lugs, said handle having a cam to engage said cross-bar, whereby said handle is thrown toward the cup as it is raised, a plunger pivotally connected to the last-named handle, and a plunger-plate carried by the plunger to operate within the cup on a plane parallel to the bottom of the cup, substantially as described.
2. A press of the type set forth, comprising two handles, a supporting-ring carried by one handle and provided with recesses, a cup provided with projections to engage in said recesses and lock with the ring, slotted lugs carried by the ring, a cross-bar carried by the lugs, a pintle carried by the other handle to engage and slide in the slots in said lugs, a cam carried on the inner end of said handle to engage with the cross-bar, whereby said handle is thrown toward the cup as it is raised, and a plunger pivotally attached to said handle and having a plunger-plate operating in the cup on a plane parallel to the bottom of the cup during the movement of the handle, substantially as described.
3. A press of the type set fort h, comprising two handles, one stationary and the other movable, a supporting-ring carried by the stationary handle, a cup removably mounted in said ring, slotted lugs carried by the ring, a pintle mounted in the movable handle and operating in the slots in said lugs, a cross-bar carried by thelugs, means carried by the movable handle to engage the cross-bar as the movable handle is operated, whereby said handle is thrown toward the cup asit is raised and a plunger pivoted to the movable handle with its plunger-plate operating in the cup on a plane parallel to the bottom of said cup, substantially as described.
4. A press of the type set forth, comprising two handles, one stationary and the other movable, a cup supported by the stationary handle, means arranged adjacent the cup in which the movable arm is slidably mounted, means carried by the movable handle for engagement with the first-named means, whereby the said movable handle is forced inward as it is swung upward, and a plunger carrying a plate pivoted to the movable handle, substantially as described.
