To roll whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, GEORGE \V. l/VISE, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Glenfield, inthe county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Curtain- Poles, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in curtain-poles; and the object of the invention is to construct a curtain-pole by means of which the curtains maybe readily secured in position and draped as may be desired without the aid of the ordinary rings and pins.

Briefly described, the invention comprises, in connection with the pole proper, a lockingbar preferably engaging with the upper face of the pole, and to this end the upper face of the pole will be provided with afiattened sur- This locking-bar is actuated through the medium of a pair of links hinged or pivoted together at one end and at their outer ends hinged or pivoted to actuating-cams, which are pivotally mounted in the curtainpole near the pivoted links, which pull upwardly at the center for elevating the cams in such a manner as to raise the securing-bar away from the pole in order to permit the insertion of the edges of the curtains into position or to remove the curtain from the pole; but when these pivoted links are forced downwardly into alinement with each other the cams carry the locking or securing bar therewith and bind the same against the curtain.

All the above construction will be hereinafter more fully described, and specifically pointed out in the claims, and in describing the invention in detail reference is had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and wherein like numerals of reference indicate like parts throughout the several views, in which Figure 1 is afront elevation of myimproved curtain-pole, showing the curtains in posi tion therein. To put my invention into practice, I provide a pole, which maybe of the ordinary cylindrical form, and cut the same longitudinally to produce a looking or securing bar 2. This looking or securing bar is provided near each end with openings 3, the outer wall of said openings being inclined, as shown at 4, and the openings being connected by means of the longitudinal groove 5 in the upper face The pole l is provided with recesses 6, in which are pivotally mounted the cams 7, the cam-surfaces 8 of which are adapted to engage with the inclined walls 4 of the recesses and the tenons't), on the upper face of which cams are adapted to engage through the openings 3 in said looking or securing bar. Pivoted or hinged to the upper face of the tenons 9 of these cams, as at 10, are the outer ends of a pair of links or rods 11, pivotally connected together at their inner ends and carrying a suitable eye 12 or other form of catch by means of which the rods may be elevated. These rods when in the closed position are adapted to have their pivotal point lie slightly below the center of the longitudinal line, and the rods are embedded in the groove 5 of the locking or securing bar. The curtain 14 is placed on the Hat upper face of the pole and held firmly by the securing rod or bar 2, being forced into engagement therewith. The knobs 1-1 may be screwed into the ends of the pole or affixed thereto in any other desired manner. The elevating of the rods or links 11 in the manner'shown in Fig. 5 of the drawings will cause the cam 7 to elevate the looking or securing bar 2 in the manner shown in dotted line in said view, and when pressure is exerted on the pivoted ends of the rods or links 11 the same are forced down into the groove 5, cansing the cams to engage the inclined cam-faces 4 of the securing or looking bar and force the latter into engagement with the curtain. Suftoo ficient space is provided between the outer face of the cams and the edge of the pole in order that the curtain may be gripped by the securing-bar opposite the cams, as well as throughout the remainder of the length of the pole. advantageously held without danger of injuring the same. The curtains may be easily and quickly either placed in position or removed therefrom, and the pole may be supported in any suitable or desirable bracket.

It will be observed that various changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the general spirit of my invention.

Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. A curtain-pole provided in its upper face near each end with recesses and having a fiattened upper face, cams pivotally mounted in said recesses, a locking or securing bar having openings to receive said cams, links or rods pivoted to said cams and pivoted together at their inner ends, and a catch carried by the inner ends of said rods or links Curtains of delicate fabrics may be for operating the same, substantially as described.

2. In a curtain-pole, a pole proper having recesses, cams pivotally mounted in said recesses, a locking or securing bar having openings to receive the upper ends of said cams and provided with inclined or cam faces to be engaged by said cams, and a pair of locking rods or links having their outer ends pivoted to the cams and their opposite ends pivoted together, substantially as described.

3. A curtain-pole comprising a stationary member and a movable member, cams pivotally mounted in the stationary member and engaging the movable member, and locking rods or links pivotally mounted to said cams and being pivoted together for actuating the same to move the movable member and also to lock the same against the stationary member, substantially as described. 4
