ISAAC B. HENDRICKSON, OF ROCHESTER, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO I-IENR-Y'J. MOORE, OF ROCHESTER, NEW YORK.
SYSTEM OF REFERENCE FOR ACCOUNT OR OTHER MEMORANDUM BOOKS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 730,650, dated June 9, 1903.
Application filed March 31. 1903.
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ISAAC B. 'I'IENDRICKSON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented an Improved System of Reference for Account or other Memorandum Books, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide an economical and efficient means for classifying accounts or other memoranda, preferably, but not necessarily, in a bound book, so that such accounts or other data may be readily referred to under diiferent classifications, which may be, to illustrate, as follows: Taking an account as an illustration, it may be classified as to the day when p. yment therefor falls due, or as to how it is to be paid, whether for goods shipped C. O. D. or to be paid for by note, or if in attorneys hands, or if in dispute, &c. These reference classifications constitute, it will be understood, of course but a few of the very large number of classifications which may be made use of in my system. Two or more of such classifications may be embodied and used in a single book or equivalent device and each of them referred to and used independently of the 0therthat is, the accounts or other memoranda may be classified in two or more different classes and referred to therein by means of my system.
The accompanying figure of the drawing shows an account-bookopened to a page upon which there appear the charges to John Stevens, of New York, for merchandise sold or delivered, as appears in these entries, on J anuary l6, and to be paid for in two months, which would make the account fall due on the 16th of March. There would then be placed upon this leaf containing the above-mentioned entries or charges and upon the day that such charges were made a movable pointer Ct, as indicated opposite Main, indicating the month in which the payment for these charges becomes due. This abbreviated word Mar. appears, preferably, upon a foldable flap I), attached to the left-hand leaf of the cover and the second or inner page thereof. This flap Z1 constitutes a means for carrying Serial No. 150.410. (No model.)
the different classifications into which the memoranda or accounts may be arranged from time to time to suit the convenience of the individual or concern using my system.
I prefer that the series of characters be car ried by a foldable flap in order that the size of the cover may not be unnecessarily increased so as to contain this series of characters, which when in operative position should be exposed to View beyond the edge of the leaves of the book. It is immaterial beyond what edges of the leaves of the book the classification characters are arranged, although they are shown in the drawing as arranged beyond the vertical edges.
On the 1st day of March the individual or clerk using the system will remove all of the pointers on the leaves of the book which are opposite the abbreviated word Mar. and place them opposite the numerals indicating the several days of the month on which the several individual accounts become due-as, for instance, the movable pointer to is placed opposite 16, as indicated in dotted lines at a in the drawingand, as above mentioned, each one of the pointers appearing opposite Mar. or the character standing for any other month in the year is to be moved at the beginning of such month to a position opposite the numerals indicating the day of the month on which the account becomes due.
On the same page with the above-mentioned charges against John Stevens and near the bottom of the page there is noticed another pointer d, located opposite the words In attorneys hands, which indicates that for some reason, perhaps owingto circumstances arising subequent to the sale and delivery of the goods, this accountis of sucha nature as to require that it be placed in the hands of the attorney for collection with such instructions as seem desirable. This means that the attorney in question is to be heard from rather than the party John Stevens himself.
Somewhat below the pointer a is noticed the exposed end of another pointer c, opposite July, such pointer indicating that the account on that page falls due some time during the month of July. Below and on the same page with this last-named pointer c is seen the exposed end of another pointer c, indicating that the account charged on that page is settled for by a note.
In this same way accounts may be indicated as to be paid 0. O. D., or as in dispute, or as having been drawn for by draft on the debtor.
As indicated in the drawing, the right page may, if desired, be used to enter credits on.
The classification characters are seen located similarly on the left and right hand edges of the book in order to facilitate the finding of an account due on any day of the month, no matter where located inthe book.
I have shown and describedonly one of the very many uses and modifications of my system which may be adapted to use in very many Ways for classifying almost any kind of memoranda.
While I have shown the leaves arranged in a book, it is immaterial what method of support such memorandum-leaves receive, and if a book it is also immaterial whether it be a bound book or a loose-leaf book.
.posed to view adjacent to such leaves, indi cating diiferent classes and subclasses under which the m emoranda on such leaves may be classified, and pointers movably attachable to such leaves forindicating two or more of such classes or subclasses under which the nemoranda on such leaves may be classified.
ISAAC 'B. HENDRLCKSON.
