ELBERT B. M. WORTMAN, OF ROCHESTER,
NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR YAWMAN AND ERBE MFG. COMPANY, OF ROCHESTER, N YORK, A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK.
BOOK OR FOLDER.
Application filed July 10,
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ELBERT B. M. lVoRr- MAN, of Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented certain newand useful Improvements in Books or Folders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had tothe accompanying drawings, forminga part of, this specification, and to the reference numerals, marked thereon. I
My present invention relates to books and stationery, and more particularly to books or folders of the kind used for. advertising purposes, and has for its object to provide a simple, cheap and striking book, leaflet or folder of this type, which will represent cer tain articles of merchandise in such an illustrative way as will at once give a strong suggestion of the manner in which the article advertised is to be arranged or used, the combination of elements in the book simulating the combination of the reality. To these and other ends the invention consists in certain improvements and combinations of parts, all as will be hereinafter more fully described, the novel features being pointed out in the claims at the end of the specification.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a plan view of a book or folder constructed in accordance with and illustrating one embodiment of my invention, the book being closed.
Fig. 2 is a reduced perspective view of the book opened and the pages separated.
Fig. 3 is a section through the book.
Fig. 4 is a plan view of the pages of the book with the cover removed, and
Fig. 5 is aplan view of a fragment of the second page of the book.
Similar reference numerals in thedrawings indicate similar parts.
In the present embodiment of the invention, as illustrated, I provide a book illustrative of and for use in advertising a filing system, such as is used in ofices for the filing of letters, cards, etc., in accordance with the vertical system of filing, wherein the sheets of paper rest in a vertical position on edge in folders or otherwise, and arranged alphabetically in rear of certain appropriately marked guides or division Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 5, '1921. 1918. Serial No. 244,161.
cards. These guides or folders are contained within a drawer in a filing cabinet so that they are normally protected, but may be easily inspected and manipulated by withdrawing the drawer. The book of my invention represents both the. receptacle and the filing system in such a way that the representations are also visible in substantially the same relationship, and may be manipulated in a similar manner.
To these ends the book illustrated consists of -a folder 1, having a front cover 2 and. a plurality of intermediate pages 3, i, 5 and 6. Each page, as for instance page i, the second page of the book, shown alone in F ig. 5, consists of a supporting portion 7 and aprofile portion 8, the latter representative of one or more units of the filing system, including in the case of page 4, several guide cards and their folders. The outline shows them in perspective and the profile portions of all of the pages collectively so overlap each other as to jointly represent the full filing index system in perspective, though the pages may be separated as in dicated in Fig. 2, and the units run through in a manner similar to that in which, in reality, the guides and folders of the reality are successively turned over with the fingers.
he cover portion 2 overlies the inner pages in the ordinary manner, and printed I or otherwise represented thereon, as shown in Fig. l, is a filing cabinet 8, and its drawer 9, the latter being partially withdrawn sufiiciently for the observer to view a part of the contents. This portion of the drawer-opening revealed in the perspective picture is, in the practice of my invention, cut out, forming an actual opening 10 in the cover 2, as clearly indicated in Fig. 2. hen the book is closed, as in Fig. 1, those portions of the profile parts 8 of the inner pages become visible through the opening 10 in so far as the corresponding portion of an actual contained filing system would become visible first page 3 appears in the opening 10 when the'book is closed, as will be seen from a comparison of Figs. 1 and 4:, in which latter figure, the arrows show the right-hand edge limits of the successive pages.
The particular filing system represented is not material,-but the explanatory matter at the left of each page in Fig. l discloses the general scheme. It is obvious that instead of the relatively'few pages of the present book, each comprising a section of the system embodying several guides and folders, a separate'page' could be provided for each 7 guide, folder or h 1;
I claim asvmy invention:
1. A book or folder having a plurality of pages collectively representing the guides and subdivisions of an ofiice 'ling system, each page comprising a base portion and a profile portion, theprofile portion bearing a representation of one or more units of the system and being 'colncident 1n outllne w th said representation.
2A bookor folder having a plurality of pages collectively representing the guides and subdivisions of an oflice filing system, each page comprising a base portion and a profile portion, the profile portion bearing a representation of one or more units of the system and belng coincident 1n outllne wlth said representation, and the base portion bearing explanatory matter with reference to the unit represented. V
3. A. book or folder comprising an outer cover having on the exterior thereof the representation of an object adapted to house or cut away along the visible boundaries of such openingto reveal the representation of the contained object, as it would appearwere both the objects physicallypresent in the relationship'represented. a V v 4:. A book or foldercomprising an outer cover having on the exterior'thereof the representation of. a filing cabinetand drawer with the latter partially withdrawn from the cabinet and inner-pages re )resentative of successive units of an index filing system,
which the cover overlies and normally par-'- tially conceals, the cover being cutaway along the visible boundaries of the drawer opening topartially reveal theinner pages and present-the units'of thefiling systemas they would appear were both the cabinet and contents physically presentin theirelationship represented. i V
