Be it known that I, THOMAS WRIGHT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ensley, in the county of Jefierson and State of Alabama, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lifting-Jacks; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a partof thisspecification.

This invention relates to new and useful improvements in lifting-jacks, and essentially to the provision of means whereby heavy loads or weights may be raised by the manipulation of hoisting meansTand also in theprovision of apparatus whereby the standards supporting the weight may be moved horizontally by means of a second j ack-screw.

The invention consists, further, in various details of construction and in combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described and then specifically defined in the appended claims.

My invention 'is clearly'illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this application, and in which drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved lifting-jack. Fig. 2 is a central vertical sectional view. Fig. 3 is a detail view showing the parts detached. Fig. 4 is a rear elevation of the jack.

Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates a rectangular frame made out of any suitable material, and mounted in the" end wall of said frame is a screw B, one end of which is squared to receive an operating-lever. Said screw passes through a block 0, which iscentrally apertured and provided with interior threads, which are engaged by the threads of said screw. A plate D, which rests on said frame, is centrally apertured and. swiveled on the lug C, which rises from the upper surface of the block 0. A pin F passes through the upper end of said upright portion in order to hold the plate to the block through which the screw passes.

Rising from the plate D is a Housing G,

one face rliereofl'and. projecting rearwardly' from said baris a pin K, which travels in the slot G iusaid housing to serve as a guide as the bar is raised and lowered. Mounted in apertures in the braces N and N, which are mounted one between the walls of the housing and the other over the upper ends of the side pieces of the housing, is a worm M which is in mesh with the teeth of said bar H, and the upper end of the pintle of said worm is squared and on which the end of a ratchetoperating lever may be placed to rotate the worm. The upper end of said bar H has a contracted and rounded projection upon which the hollow. shank portion of the shoe R is swiveled and with which the weight to be hoisted contacts.

From the construction described and as illustrated in the drawings it will be noted that by the-provision ofa jack-screw embodyinn the features of my invention great power may be exerted by t he operation of the ratchetlever,'and when a load is raised it may be moved longitudinally by operatingzihe horizontallydisposed screw. If preferred, the upright and horizontal portions of the jack maybe detached and used separately from each other, it. being understood that my invention contemplates the use of both parts together or singly as one may desire.

Havingthus fully described myinvention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A jaclcscrew comprising: a horizontallydisposed'fra n1ework,a screw horizontally disposed in the ends thereof, a block having an aperture with threaded Walls mounted upon said screw,- and a lifting-jack swiveled on an extended portion of said block, as set forth.

2. The combination, in a lifting-jack, a

\ base portion, a horizontallymounted screw therein, a block having an aperture with interior threads mounted on said screw, a swiv eled plate centrally apertured and mounted upon a contracted end of said block, a pin .passing through said contracted portion to hold the swiveled plate in place, and a lifting-jack mounted upon said swiveled plate, as set forth.

3. A lifting-jack, a base portion, having a horizontally-mounted screw journaled therein, a block, having an aperture with interior threads mounted on said screw, a plate swiveled to said block, a housing mounted on said plate, a vertically-movable bar mounted in guideways in said housing and having one of its faces threaded, a worm vertically journaled within the housing and in mesh with the threads of said bar, and a shoe on the upper end of said bar, as set forth.
