Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIoE.-
WVILLIAM G. CROSSLEY, OF SHULLSBUBG, WISCONSIN.
IMPROVEMENT IN COIVIB-INED SULKY-PLOW AN-D CULTIVATOR.
Speciiication forming part of Letters Patent No. 72,981 dated January 7, 1568.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM G. CRossLEY, of Shullsburg, in the county of La Fayette and State of Wisconsin, have invented an Improved Combined Sulky-Plow and Corn-Cultivator, and I do herebydeclare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description ofthe construction and operation of the same,
the front of the frame by means of springcatch, in order that the front end of the beam maybe readily thrown downward, so as to carry the plow out of the ground, or detached, as when the cultivator is to be used, and in attaching a rod to the shifting devices and to the beam of the plow, for the purpose of holding the latter out of the ground when the beam has been loosened from the catch; second, in the use of loops arranged to support the seat in position for cultivating or plowing; third, in attaching elbows to the adjusting-rod for the purpose of raising the arms which support the loops through which the shanks of the outer shovels pass, and in attaching a bar to each of said arms and to the shanks of the inner shovels, whereby all o" the shovels are raised by turning a single lever attached to the adjusting-rod, and held in position without the use of ratchets or fastenin gs.
In order to give a correct understanding of my invention, l have marked corresponding parts with similar letters, and will now givea detailed description.
A B represent the front and rear parts of the frame which supports my devices, and is supported by means of common wheels W' W, in the usual manner, and has also the devices V U attached to the ends, for the purpose of raising and lowering the shovels j' f f f and plow E, as the case may require. The Shanks M M of the outer shovels have joints in plates lt, Figs. l and 3, and are made to pass through loops P l), attached to arms Q Q, the latter eX- tendiug to the front of frame A and through the plates It R, and are pivoted to the same, similar to shanks M M. An adjusting-rod, S, Figs. 1 and 3, is made to operate in crosspieces F F and support elbows T T, same ig ures, used to raise the arms Q Q, connected with shanks M M by means of loops P P, above mentioned.
It will be seen from this description that if the lever S', attached to rod S, is forced over back, as seen at Fig. 3, all of the shovels f will be raised, the shanks L L being operated upon by means of bars O O, attached to arms Q Q, and that the elbows T T will hold said rod up unless it is thrown back by lever S', or other means than the motion of the cultivator.
Common chains g g are attached to the inner Shanks, L L, and to the front part, A, in the usual manner, for supporting the shovels when in use, as seen at Fig. l.
A lever, h, and rod t' are used in connection with beam C, for the purpose of holding plow E out of the ground when turning around or going to and from a field. Thisarrangement is important, although simple, and provides means, in combination with spring-catch y, Fig. 2, for holding plow E in or out of the ground, as the case may require, at small cost, and which can be readily put in use by a person having a knowledge of the common plows now in operation.
A loop, K, Fig. l, is attached to the end of the tongue D, and to support brace G of the seat, said brace having rigidly attached to its lower end a plate, J, having a nib at the end, as seen at Fig. 2, for passing through said loop and holding fast to it.
A similar loop, H, is made fast to the front part, A, of the frame, and used, as seen at Fig. 1, to support the seat when plowing and the loop K when cultivatingthe tongue D, in the latter case, being arranged to t the frame A B over the holes i i, through which the same bolts used to hold said tongue in its present position may be put. This arrangement is of importance, for it is necessary that the draft should be on a line with beam C when the plow is used, and in the center of frame A B when cultivating.
The material to be used and the method of contructing implements for a similar purpose are so well understood that no further description is necessary to enable persons of ordinary skill to make and use the invention.
Having thus fully described my device, what l claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, ls-
1. The arrangement and combination of the beam C, rod t', spring-catch y, and lever h, for regulating the position of plow E, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination of rod S, having a lever, S', with arms Q Q, elbows T T, loops P P,
and Shanks M L, arranged to raise and lower shovels j' f f f and hold them in position, as described, in conjunction with bars O O, as set forth.
3. The loops K H, in combination with a movable brace, G, havin g the plate J arranged so as to it either loop, as and for the purpose set forth.
