Letters .Patent No. 99,538, dated February 8, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT IN GANG-FLOWS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the lame.
To allA whom it may concern Be it known l,that we, JOHnT COX and SOLOMON COX, of Eugene City, in the county of Lane, and State of Oregon, have invented a new and improved Gang- Plow; andwe do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- `Figure l represents a side view, partly in section, of our improved gang-plow.
Figure 2 is a back view, partlyin section, of the same.
Similar let-ters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention-relates to a new gang-plow, which is adjustable in every direction, and of simple and durable construction.
The invention consists in the general arrangement ot` the adj'l'lsting-devices, and of various details of construction, all as hereinafter more fully described. v
A, in the drawing, represents the U-shaped axle of our improved gang-plow. On its ends are hung the wheelsB B, and on its elevated middle part-is secured the tongue C, being stayed by braces a a., as shown.
D D are the. plow-beams. Their front ends are connected by suitable plates b b, which are bolted or otherwise fastened to the beams. Through the connected front ends of the plow-beams is litted a vertical bar, E, which passes through an eye, c, that is formed on the connected front ends of .bars d d; whose rear ends are pvoted to the axle, or to ears projecting from the same. 'This is the only draught-connection between the truck and theplow.
The lower end of the bar E carries a. small supporting-wheel, o. 'lhe clevis e is attached to the frontend of the connected plow-beams, to a perforated vertical plate attached to the same. 'lhe proper balanceI is produced by three bars, f, g, and h', of which the first named projects vertically from the front end of the plow-beams, having its upper end pivoted to a link, i,
which is fitted loose around the bar E. 'lhe bar y 4projects obliquely from the front part of the connected plow-beams, and has its upper end pivoted'to the bar h, which projects from the bar E, as shown. Where the various parts, fg h., are pivoted, they are provided with numbers of apertures, to make them, and with them, the position of the plow-beams adjustable.
The plowshares F are each provided with two upward-projecting arms, j and if, Of which the former, shortest arm, is fastened to the standard G, which'd projects downward from the plow-beam. The front-arm k is fitted against the under side andvthrough the bodyV .of the plow-beam.
To the side of the tongue is lpivoted a ratchet-wheel` l, to which ropes or chains man., which extend to the plow-beams, are secured. A lever, H is pivoted to the iixed axle of the ratchet-wheel, and will, when engaged with the teeth of said wheel, serve to turn the saine, to raise the plows to a suitable height. A springpawl, n, engaging in the teeth of the wheel, locks it in every desired position. Then thrown out, it allows the 'plows to drop.
One ofthe plowfbeams may, if desired, be detached, and the other used separately ou the apparatus.
rlhe three astenings on the curved axle are movable thereon, to allow one wheel to be thrown into a furrow when but one plow is used.
Having thus described our invention,
We claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent-l 1. The bars f g h, when combined with the upright bar E and plow-beams D D, substantially in the man1 :ner and for the purpose herein shown and described.
