TO-l ALL WHOM I'I MAY CVONCERN:
'Beit known that I, C. P. NORTON, of Roseville, in the county of Warren, and State of Illinois, have invented anew and improved Cultivator; and I do hereby declare that the followings is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same,- reference being had Figure 1 is a side view of my invention; and
Figure 2 is a front view of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
This invention consistsin new and 'useful improvements in the construction and arrangement of the several parte of a corn cultivator, whereby au eicient and very simple machine is produced, as hereinafter explained.
A, in the drawing, is the plnngh beam, and a a vthe ploughs. The framework of the machine consistsin theJpoleB, and an iron arch or semi-Octagonal fra'me C. The iron arch Cis ,bolted rigidly to' the pole B, and
stayed by rods l l; and this framework is then mounted on a lpair of small wheels, D, which have`their bearings on the lower ends or hanging legs c c of the arch C. At the front end of the plough beam a bolt, b,
is secured to the under side of the pole, and on this bolt is a box, f, which slidesvvertically thereon; this box is supported on the rod b in an adjustable manner by meansof au .iron strap or loop, F, which passes up over the pole, and by a set-screw, 1:, having a bearing on the tongue or pole. The front -end of the plough beam is "pivoted to the box f`by a horizontal transverse pivot h; so that this connection betweenA the front end of the plough beam'an'dthe pole, as awhole, makes a universal joint, allowing the .rea'r end of the plough beam to be moved freely in a vertical or lateral direction. I is a'n evener, which consists of a lever mounted transversely y"son the tongue B by a pivot at its centre, and to each end of this lever or evener is attached a ro'pe, n, which,
passing down under a ,pulley e, pivoted to the legs of the'archC, terminates with a hook for attaching the draught animals. The rear end of the pole is provided with a hook, m, to hold the ploughs up o ut of action.
In operation the forward end of the plough beam Bis readily raised or lowered to regulate the depth of the ploughing by the set-screw k, which raises or lowers the'sliding-box f as desired. The framework of my improved cultivator consists ehiey in two pieces, B and C, constructed and arranged as shown. By these means I produce a cheap and desirable machine.
Having thus described my inventionIl what I claim as newy and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. I claim the pole B, arch C, and supporting wheels D D, constructed and 'arranged substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.
2. I claim the pole B 6, Gig.' 1,) sliding-box f, loop F, and set-screw k, Ain connection with the plough-beam Y A, all arranged and operated as and for the purpose described.
C. P. NORTON.
