IMPROVEMENT IN CULTIVATORS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 41,769, dated March 1, 1864.
To all whom it may concern:
Be itknown that I, JACOB HAEGE, of Shiloh, in the county of St. Clair and State ot'lllinois, have invented anew and Improved Cultivator and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference beinghad to the accompanyin g drawings, making a part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a side sectional view of my invention, taken in the line w 00, Fig. 2; Fig. 2,
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both figures.
To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and constructmyinvention, I will proceed to describe it.
A represents an axle; and B B, wheels of quite large diameter, which are placed loosely on the axle A; and (l is a flat frame, which is firmly secured to the axle A by bolts a and sockets or clips I). The front end of the frame 0 is composed of two bars, a 0, one being directly over the other, the upper bar 0 being secured to the upper surfaces of the side bars, (I d, of the said frame and the lower bar 0 secured to theunde'r surfaces of said bars,a space being allowed between to admit of the draftpole D passing between the bars 00, as shown clearly in Fig. 1. The back part of the draftpole rests on the back bar, 6, of the frame 0, and the draft-pole is secured to the axle A by means of a'holt which passes vertically up through a metal strap, f, at the under side of: the axle A, and through a metal plate, g, on the top of the axle, and then through the pole D and a metal strap, h, which extends over the top of the same. On the upper end of the bolt there is a thumb-nut, E,the lower end of which bears upon strap f. The strap his bent downward at its ends, and is secured by bolts or screws 11 to the axle A. This strap prevents the thumb-nut from working loose on the bolt E when the pole D is turned either to the right or left.
At the front side of the plate g there is a segment rack, j, into which a pinion, 7c, gears, the latter being on a vertical shaft, F, which passes through the poleDand plate I, as shown clearly in Fig. 1. The pinion k is between two circular plates, m m, which lap over the edges of the teeth of the rack j and serve as guides for the pinion, keeping itin gear with the rack.
On the shaft F there is fitted a tube, G,
which has a ratchet, a, on its lower end, into which a panel, 0, catches, and on the upper end of the tube G there is secured a handwheel, H. To the tube Gthere are attached two'cords ap, which pass over pulleys g g on the back bar, e, and are connected to the back parts of two plow-beams, II. Onthe back part of the pole D the drivers seat J is secured.
The plow-beams I I pass through pendent stays K K, attached to the axle A in such a manner that they may be adjusted laterally to admit of the plows L L, which are attached to the beams II, being placed nearer together or farther apart, as desired. The front parts of the beams I I are slotted longitudinally, as
shown at r, and are fitted on the lower parts the lower parts of which bear or rest upon thev beams I, as shown clearly in Fig. 1.
To each beam I a whiffietlee, N, is attached,
as follows: The whiffletrees are connected by pivots t to plates 11, leaving oblong slotsu in them, through which the rods J pass, and'the back end of each plate a is connected by two rods, to w, to a cross-bar, a, which hasawooden pin, 1), passin gvertically through its center and into the beam. A series of holes may be made in each beam to admit of the latter being adjusted farther forward or backward, as desired.
The operation is as follows: A horse is attached to each beam I, and the draft-pole D connected with the team in the usual way. Theplows L work one ateach side of the row of corn to be plowed, and the team walk, one animal at each. side of the row, each animal being attached directly to a plow-beam. As the implement is drawn along the driver can at any time raise the plows by turning the tube Gr, so as to plow at any required depth or to raise the plows entirely free from the earth,
the plow-beams being retained or held at any point by the ratchet n and pawl 0, and the plows are adjusted laterally, .so as'to conform to the sinuosities of the row by turning the draft-pole 1) either tothe right or left, which i The curved plates M and springs L preserve is accomplished by turning the shaft F through the medium of the crank c at its top, the pinion k actuating the draft-pole, in consequence of gearing into the rack j. Thus, by this simple arrangement the plows may be guided right or left and made to plow at an equal distance at each side of the row, however winding and sinuous it may be.
The draft-pole D may, when desired, be secured in acentral position with the frameOby means of a pin, a, passing through the pole and into the rackj.
the; proper level of the beams I under a vertical-play or movement of the pole D, while the stays'K prevent any casual lateral movement of the plows in the event of the latter coming in contact with clods or'obstructions of any 'indr The frames K may be attached to the bar I c of the frame 0 by means of bolts 12?, fitted in oblong slhts in the bar 0 or passing through any of a series of holes in said bar, and the stays K may be attached to the axle A in a similar manner. The proper attachment of the frames K and stays K to their respective parts, in order to admit of a lateral adjustment of the frames and stays, will suggest itself to any mechanic. The end may be attained in various ways.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure byLetters
