OFFICE FILE-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 729,040, dated May 26, 1903.
Application filed December 22,1902. Serial No. 136,092. (No model.) I
To all whmn it 7111a concern:
Be it known that I,JULIUs CAESAR BRANDES, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, residing at New York, county of New York, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement/in Office File-Holders, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to that classof office file-holders which comprise generally a box.
open atone end and the top, the files resting against one end of the box andbeing held in place by a follower which may be withdrawn and form a rest for the files movedbackduring inspection. Y
My invention has for its-object certain improvements in the construction of the follower and its operating-lever.
I will first describe the embodiment of my invention illustrated in. the accompanying drawings and then point out the invention in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side view of the box and follower, one side of box broken away. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the follower and appurtenant mechanism. Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3 3, Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a section on the lined I, Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a detail sectional view showing recessed portion of bottom of box and lug of follower.
The box is formed with the sides a and end ct, against which latter the files are placed. The bottom a of this box has the recessed portions a having the slot at. The follower consists of the main plate B and supplemental plate B The supplemental plate B is riveted to the main plate by rivets c c and has the flanges c c. The bottoms of these flanges are cut at an angle, as shown at C, To the flanges is connected by the shank b the lug b. The lug rests in the recessed portion a of the bottom of the box, while the shank 1) passes through the slot a 0 is a shaft connected to the flanges c c and to which shaft is pivotally connected the plate D, to which is connected by pin e the lever E. On both sides of the plate D are the tail pieces I), having pins d, which rest in slots 0 in the flanges c c. The lever E is also connected by the toggle-joint F with the shaft f,
extending between flanges c c. The bottom of lever E is curved inward, as shown atf, and rests upon the bottom of the box when the lever forces the follower against the files. The top of the lever is provided with the bandle F.
The operation is as follows: The files are placed against the end a of the box. The follower is moved inward until it contacts with the files. The handle F of the lever is then forced inward, which causes the lever to move upon its pivot, bringing the lower end of the lever against the bottom of the box and forcing the follower in an inclined position against the files. In this movement the tailpiece d will pass to the limit ofthe slots 0 and the further movement lifts the plate 0, jamming the lug bagainst the top of the recessed portion a When it is desired to inspect any of the files, the lever F is moved to release the follower, and it is turned bodily, so that the angle portion of the flanges c a rest upon the bottom of the box. The files may then be pushed over and rest upon this follower until the desired file to be inspected is reached.
-I do not: intend to limit myself to the specific mechanis'rn hereinbefore described except as the same may be specifically claimed.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to protect by Letters Patent, is 1 1. In a file-holder of the character described, the combination with a receptacle having a recessed bottom, of a follower, provided with a lug adapted to rest and be confined in said recess, a plate pivotally connected to said follower, so as to have a limited movement upon its pivot-point, a lever connected to said plate, the lower end of said lever resting against the bottom of said receptacle when the lever is moved on its pivot in one direction.
' 2.- Inafile-holder of the characterdescribed, the combination with a receptacle having a recessed bottom, of a follower provided with a lug adapted to rest and be confined in said recess, said follower being provided with flanges projecting from its rear surface, a plate pivotally secured between said projecting flanges, a lever secured to said plate, the lower end of said lever resting against the bottom of said receptacle when the lever is moved on its pivot in one direction.
3. Inafile-holder of the character described, the combination with a receptacle having a recessed bottom, of a follower provided with a lug adapted to rest and be confined in said recess, said follower being provided with flanges projecting from/its rear surface, a plate pivotally secured between said projecting flanges, a tailpiece projecting from the pivotal plate and having a connection with the follower allowing a limited movement, a lever secured to said plate, the lower end of said lever resting against the bottom of said receptacle when the lever is moved on its pivot in one direction.
4. In a file-holder of the character described,
the combination with a receptacle having a recessed bottom, of a follower provided with a lug adapted to rest and be confined in said recess, said follower being provided with flanges projecting from its rear surface, a plate pivotally secured between said projecting flanges, a tailpiece projecting from the pivotal plate and having a slot-and-pin connection with the follower, a lever secured to said plate, the lower end of said lever resting against the bottom of said receptacle when the lever is moved on its pivot in one direction. 5. Inafile-holderofthe characterdescribed, the combination with a receptacle having a recessed bottom, of a follower provided with a lug adapted to rest and be confined in said recess, said follower being provided with flanges projecting from its rear surface, a plate pivotally secured between said projecting flanges, a tailpiece projecting from the pivotal plate and having a' connection with the flanges allowing a-limited movement, a lever secured to said plate, the lower end of said lever resting against the bottom of said receptacle when the lever is moved on its pivot in one direction.
6. In a fi le-holder of the character described,
the combination with a receptacle having a recessed bottom, of a follower provided with a lug adapted to rest and be confined in said recess, said follower being provided with flanges projecting from its rear surface, a plate pivotally secured between said projecting flanges, a tailpiece projecting from the pivotal plate and having a slot-and-pin connection with the flanges, a lever secured to said plate, the lower end of said lever resting against the bottom of said receptacle when the lever is moved on its pivot in one direction.
7. In a file-holder of the character described, the combination with a receptacle having a recessed bottom, of a follower provided with a lug adapted to rest and be confined in said recess, said follower being provided with flanges projecting from its rear surface, a plate pivotally secured between said projecting flanges, so as to have a limited movement, a lever secured to said plate, the lower end of said lever resting against the bottom of said receptacle when the lever is moved on its pivot in one direction.
8. In a file-holder of the characterdescribed,
the combination with a receptacle having a recessed bottom, of a follower provided with a lug adapted to restand be confined in said recess, said follower being provided with flanges projecting from its rear surface, a plate pivotally secured between said projecting flanges, so as to.have a limited pivotal movement, a lever secured to said plate, the lower end of said lever resting against the bottom of said receptacle when the lever is moved on its pivot in one direction.
In testimony. of which invention I have hereunto set my hand, at New York, on this 15th day of December, 1902.
JULIUS CAESAR BRANDES.
