PATENT OFFICE.
ELZIE L. RIDGWAY AND DANIEL H. BAILEY, OF DENISON, TEXAS.
SURGICAL APPLICATOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 728,980, dated May 26, 1903.
' Application filed January 15,1903. Serial No. 139,180. (No model.)
To a/ZZ whom it inay'concern:
Be it known that we, ELZIE L. RIDGWAY and DANIEL H. BAILEY, citizens of the United States, residing at Denison, in the county of Grayson and State of Texas, have invented a new and useful Surgical Applicator, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain improvements in surgical applicators, and has for its principal object to provide a device which may be employed for the application of a suitable medicament to the membranous lining of the urethral canal of the phallus.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character by which the membrane may be stretched in order to insure the contact of all of its surface with the medicament with which the applicator is coated.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a device which will catch and retain any offensive discharges from the urethra; and a further object is to provide means for properly holding the device in place while the patient is walking.
Figure l is a sectional elevation of a surgical applicator constructed in accordance with the invention, the drawing being on an exaggerated scale in order to more clearly illustrate the construction. Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view of the same.
The same reference characters indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
1 designates a cylinder, formed of rubber or other suitable material which may be compressed slightly for introduction into the urethra and will slightly expand'to its normal size when released and stretch the membranous lining of the canal, so that the ointment or other medicament with which the cylinder is coated may be brought into contact with all portions of the lining. The cylinders may be of any length, but as now made are intended for local treatment at or near the meatus, the medicament being held in close contact with the membrane as the urethra is held in slightly-dilated condition.
In order to prevent soiling the clothing, the cylinder carries a small sack 2, of rubber or other impervious material, the discharge being caught and retained by the sack and emptied as occasion may require.
In some cases the cylinder may not retain its position by its expansive tendency, especially when the patient is Walking, and as an additional securing means an elastic ring 3 is attached to the outer end of the cylinder, the ring being passed over the glans and firmly holding the cylinder in place.
We claim as our invention- 1. A surgical applicator comprising a hollow cylinder adapted to hold a medicament in contact with the membranous lining of the urethra, and a flexible sack disposed Within the cylinder and serving to receive discharges from the urethra, the inner open end of the sack being secured to the inner wall of the cylinder.
2. A surgical applicator comprising a hollow cylinder adapted to hold a medicament in contact with the membranous lining of the urethra of the phallus, and an elastic ring secured to the cylinder and adapted to engage the glans.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our own we have hereto affixed our signatures in the presence of two witnesses.
ELZIE L. RIDGWAY.
DAN. H. BAILEY.
