Be it known that LERNEs'r GOTHBERG,a citizen of the United States, residing in Jersey City, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Socket- Cover and Shade-Holder, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to certain improvements in combined socket-covers and shadeholders for electroliers or chandeliers, so that a more convenient and ornamental device is obtained by which access is given at all times to the lamp-socket whenever it is necessary to examine or repair the wiring of the same.

Heretofore socket-covers were permanently attached to the lamp-socket and had to be bent in backward direction, so as to get access to the socket. This backward bending of the cover in order to examine the socket and the forward bending of the same after it had been repaired was very annoying and often produced the breaking off of some of the ornamental portions of the cover.

The object of this invention is to dispense with the objections to the present socketcover and combine the same with the shadeholder, which was heretofore made integral with the socket itself, in such a manner that the combined socket-cover and shade-holder can be readily detached at any time from the lamp-socket, so as to give convenient access to the same; and for this purpose the invention consists of a combined socket-cover and shade-holder that is formed of a bell-shaped metallic body or shell placed over the lampsocket and provided at one end with means for attachment to the lamp-socket and at the other end with means for supporting the shade...

The shell of the lampholder is attached by screws (1 a to the base or cap of the socket, which is applied to the arm of the electrolier in the usual manner. The screws a, serve at the same time for attaching the combined socket-cover and shadeholder by means of L-shaped slots (1, which are arranged'in the upper end or rim of the combined socket-cover and shade-holder, as shown clearly in Fig. 3.

The combined socket-cover and shadeholder is formed of a bell-shaped metallic body or shell D, which is preferably provided with cylindrical portions or rims d d The upper contracted rim (1 is provided at diametrically opposite points with L-shaped recesses d,-that serve to formwith the clamping-screws a in the end of the shell of the lamp-holder bayonet-joints, so as to permit the attachment of the shade-holder to the lamp-socket by the same screws by which the lamp and socket are connected with each other. The shell D is also provided with a suitable recess K for the manipulation of the key of the lamp; The shell D is placed in position onthe lamp-socket by placing the L-shaped slots on the shanks of the clamping-screws a and then turning the same as far as permitted by the angular portion of the L-shaped recesses in the rim of the shadeholder, after which the clamping-screws are tightened up, so as to firmly hold the shell D in position on the'lamp-socket.

The outer or larger cylindrical rim d of the socket-cover D is provided at three points withthe usual screws 6 for supporting the neck of the lamp-shade,saidneck being prolamp-socket is provided with the usual switch,

vided with a concaved rim for permitting the engagement with the supporting-screws in the well-known manner. At the points where the shade-supporting screws pass through the rim d the rim is provided with screwthreaded collars that are soldered to the rim in the usual manner.

The metallic shell D can be made of plain sheet metal, or the shell may be ornamented in the manner shown in Figs. 1 and 3, the ornamentation being preferably in keeping with the style and character of the electrolier in connection with which the combined socketcover and shade-holder is to be used.

The combined socketcover and shadeholder forms a very convenient and ornamental device for the purpose described. especially as it dispenses with the inconvenient ornamental socket-covers heretofore in use and substitutes a device that can be readily removed for examining or repairing the lam psocket, while it forms when in position on the lamp-socket a neat and practical supporting device for the shade, not requiring any attaching device for attaching the same to the lamp-socket.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The combination, with a lamp-socket, having a cap, and a shell, and exteriorlyaccessible screws securing the same together, of a cover adapted to inclose said shell and to be secured by the same screws, substantially as set forth.

2. The combination, with a lamp-socket, having a cap, and a shell, and exteriorlyaccessible screws securing the same together, of a cover adapted to inclose said shell and to be secured by the same screws, and means for securing a shade to said cover, substantially as set forth.

3. The combination, with a lamp-socket, having a cap, and a shell, and exteriorlyaccessible securing-screws at the circumference of the cap, of a cover adapted to inclose said shell and the circumference of said cap, and to be secured by the same screws, substantially as set forth.

4. The combination, with a lamp-socket, having a cap, and a shell below the same, and exteriorly-accessible securing-screws at the circumference of said cap, of a cover adapted to inclose said shell and the circumference of said cap, and to be secured by the same screws, and means for securing a shade to said cover, substantially as set forth.

5. The combination, with a lamp-socket, having a cap, and a shell below and within the same, and exteriorly-accessible securingscrews at the circumference of said cap, of a cover adapted to inclose said shell and the circumference of said cap and to be secured by the same screws, substantially as set forth.
