LEWIS T. ARNOLD, OE Sr. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
ROLL-PAPER HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 727,874, dated May 12, 1903.
Application filed August 12,19Q2. Serial No. 119,450. (No-model.)
To @ZZ whom it may concern.:
Be it known that I, LEWIS T. ARNOLD, of the city of St. Louis, State of Missouri, have invented certain new anduseful Improvements in Roll-Paper Holders, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.
My invention relates toroll-paper holders, and has for its object to provide a holder forimperforated roll-paper provided with means for tearing the paper into sections of approximately equal length.
My invention consists of certain details of construction, which will be more readily understood by reference to the drawings, which form part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a side view of my roll-paper holder. Fig. 2 is a top View of same. Figs. 3, 4, and 5 are details of construction.
Upon the base lis rigidly and vertically mounted the side support 2, which is provided with a self-contained rack 3 and theV pinion 4t, by means of which one end of the pin 5 is carried. The side support Gis mounted on the base 1 in alinementiwith the support l2 by means of the hinge 7.
The cutter 8 is Yrigidly and horizontally mounted upon the base l between the supports 2 and 6. The side support 6 is provided with a rack 9 upon its lower inner surface and is adapted to fold toward, engage with, and carry the pinion lO upon the end of the pin 5.
A cylindrical spool 11 is Inounted upon the pin 5 and provided with a barbed spring 12, contained in the longitudinal slot 13, which barbed spring is adapted to engage with the interior opening of a roll of paper 14 and hold it in position unt-il consumed.
When not in use, the spool and the roll of paper carried thereby are held by gravity at the outer and lower extremities of supports 2 and 6, the loose end of the paper being indicated as 15 in Fig. 1. In order todetach a section of the paper from the roll, the user pulls downward on the loose end 15, and by the pull the roll is carried by means of the pinions and racks backward and upward until the body of the roll is carried into contact with the cutter 8, when the continuance of the pull will tear and detach the section of paper and thel remainder of the roll will be projected outwardly and downwardly by its own weight until it again rests at the outer and lower extremities of supports 2 and 6. Y When the roll'vof paper is exhausted, the
vsupport 6 is swung out of engagement with the pinion 10, a new roll is slipped upon the spool 11, the support 6 is swung back u ntil the rack 9 and pinion 10 again engage, and the hinge 7 is then locked by means of the pin 16.
The side support 6 is provided with the hinge 7, as shown in detail in Fig. 5, by which it is adapted to be thrown out of or into engagement with the pinion 10 for the purpose of replacing the roll of paper. The pin 16 locksgthe side support 6 in position by bping sliddownwardand over the hinge through the 1ug'17.' j
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to have secured to me by the grant of Letters Patent, is-
1. Inr a roll-paper holder the combination of a baseplate, parallel supports mounted thereon and projecting outwardly and downwardly, said supports being provided with racks adapted to engage with pinions mounted upon a pin anda spool mounted upon the pin, one of said supports being mounted by.
a hinge to admit of placing successive rolls of paper on the spool, a pin whereby said hinge is locked when the support carried by lit is in position to carry the spool, andra cutter mounted upon the base-plate in a plane parallel to that of the pin, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
2. In a roll-paper holder the combination of a base-plate, parallel supports mounted thereon and' projecting outwardly and downwardly, said supports being provided with racksadapted to engage with pinions mountedupon apin, and a spool mounted upon the pin, one of said supports being mountedby a hinge to admit of placing successive rolls of paper on the'spool, a pin whereby said hinge is looked when the support carried by it is in position to carry the spool, the spool being provided with a barbed spring adapted to hold the roll of paper in position, and a cutter mounted upon the baseplate in a plane parallel to that of the pin, substantiall y as and for the purposes speced.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
LEWIS T. ARNOLD.
