Description

PATENTED MAY 5, 1903.
NO MODEL.
(jaunt Roz UNITED STATES Patented May 5, 1903 ALBERT P. LEWIS, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
CLASP OR FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 727,162, dated May 5, 1903. Application filed July 30,1902. Serial No. 117,706. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT P. LEWIS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clasps or Fasteners, of which the followingis a specification.
My invention relates to connections or supports for garments and the'like; and the primary object is to provide a simple, compact, reliable, and inexpensive device capable of general use as a'connection where buttons or the like are employed and which will admit of ready attachment and detachment of the articles thereby connected.
The improved connection comprises a hinged pendant or loop and a shield, plate, or guard having spring connection with said pendant or loop and cooperating therewith to prevent its accidental detachment.
The nature, characteristic features, and scope of the invention will be more clearly understood from the following detailed description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof, wherein- Figure I is a perspective view of a connecting member or support embodying, features of the invention and showing the same for illustrative purposes only applied to one end of a suspender. Fig. 2 is a rear elevational view of the same, and Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view. V
In the drawings, a represents the pendant or loop, which, as illustrated, is madeof wire. Said loop is narrowed atits extremity, so as to underlie a button or the like, as in dicated in Fig. 1, and the respective arms of the loop are coiled, as at b, to provide eyes, through which is passed a wire that is-then looped to form the attaching member 0, which constitutes, in elfect, a hinge for the pendant or loop a. After forming the coils or springs b the arms or free ends (1 of the pendant or loop are directed downwardly and constitute supports for a shield, plate, or guard e, that may be of sheet metal and the edges of which are beaded or bent over the arms orsupports' d, as shown at e in Figs. land 2.
In use the attaching member 0 is sewed or otherwise secured to a band m, which maybe the end of a Suspender or one of the straps of a horse-blanket or the like, and the loop or pendant a is slid under a button y or the like that is secured to the member a to be connected. When thus connected the device cannot accidentally become detached, because the spring plate or guard 6 will bear against the button, and thus prevent the pendant from slipping down sufficiently to disengage itself. By simply raising the guard e in respect to the loop or pendant the latter can at once be released;
It will be obvious to those skilled in the art to which the invention appertains that modifications may be made in details without departing from the'spirit and scope of the same. Hence I do not limit inyself to the precise construction and arrangement of parts hereinbefore described, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings; but,
Having described the nature and objects of theinvention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
Adevice of the character stated, comprising a pendant consisting of a wire bent to form a loop adapted for engagement with a button, said wire having its ends coiled and bent in the direction of the loop, a shield or keeper attached to the ends of the wire and covering the wide portion of the loop, and a suspending-loop loosely engaging the coils of the wire, substantially as'described.
In testimony whereof I havehereuntosigned my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
.-ALBERT- P. LEWIS. Witnesses:
