PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM KING, OF ECCLE S, ENGLAND.
WRENCH.
SPECIFIC ATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 727,153, dated May 5, 1903.
Application filed March 14, 1901. Serial No. 51,195- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM KING, a British subject, and a resident of Eccles, in the county of Lancaster, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to that class of wrench in which a ratchet wheel or disk with an open center is provided to embrace the not or screw-head, such as is described in the specification of my former patent of December 27, 1898, No. 616,540. It is designed to render the tool more handy and eflicient in use. Hitherto the ratchet has been constructed with the sides level or flush with the head or holder. I now propose to attach frictionplates at both sides of the head or holder, so that pressure or friction may be applied thereto laterally by the hand of the operator or otherwise to prevent the ratchet turning back with the handle when applied to a loose.
nut or screw. It will be fully described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
Figure l is a side elevation of the wrench;
Fig. 2, aplan of same; Fig. 3, a section on line mm, Fig. 1; Fig. 4, a section showing a modification; Fig.5, aside elevation showinga further modification; Fig. 6, plan of Fig. 5.
The head A of the wrench in formed of two dished parts a a, secured by screws a to which is fitted a tubular handle B. The ratchet D is inserted between and is carried around in one direction with the head A by the pawl G. The ratchet I now make with friction-plates cl attached thereto, projecting from an eighth to a quarter of an inch beyond the face of the head A, so that the same may bear against the work with more or less 'friction. The frictiomplates d are flanged with flanges d to extend beyond the aperture in the head, as shown in Figs. 1 to 3, ora ring d may be attached thereto by screws or otherwise, as in Fig. 4. The friction-plates (1 may be milled around the edges, as shown in Fig. 2, or may be made with a number of indentations d as in Figs. 5 and 6.
In use the wrench is applied over the nut or screw, and the operator presses by his hand or otherwise laterally against the frictionplates (Z or (1 thereby setting up suificient resistance to prevent the ratchet D turning back with the handle in the reverse direction to that by which it is moved by the pawl C. On the removal of the hand the friction is removed.
What I claim as my invention,and desire to protect by Letters Patent, is-
In a ratchet-wrench the combination of two dished plates with journals therein, rivets securing the plates together to form a hollow head, a tubular handle fitted over the end of the head-plates, a ratchet-wheel journaled between the hollow head-plates and inclosed thereby, an i-nclosed pawl engaging the ratchet-wheel,and friction-plates at both sides of the ratchet-wheel firmly secured thereto, and projecting outside the hollow head to which friction is applied laterally to prevent rotation of the ratchet in the reverse direction, substantially as described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WVILLIAM KING.
