No.726,729. PATENTED APR.28,1903.

APPLICATION FILED APR. 9, 1902.
NO MODEL. 2 SHEETS-SHEET 2.
UNITED STATES AATENT Genres.
JOHN N. MCGREW, OF HOLTON, KANSAS.
COMMODE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 726,729, dated April 28, 1903.
Application filed April 9, 1902.
To a whmn it natty concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN N. MCGREW, a citizen of the United States, residing at Holton, in the county of Jackson and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oommodes, of which the following is a specification.
Myinvention relates to dry closets or commodes; and the object thereof is to provide an article of this character which will be practically odorless, simple in structure, and capable of being emptied with facility.
To these ends the invention includes a receptacle or commode-casing proper having the usual opening in the top thereof, which forms the seat, provided with an improved form of cover. Itfurther includes means for causing a downdraft through said opening for carrying off all odors. It further includes an improved support for the eXcrement-receptacle for facilitating the removal thereof, and it also includes a guard and deflector cooperatin g with said receptacle,wl1ich prevents the urine passing outside of the same and insures its discharge thereinto.
The invention further includes the details of construction, as will be hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claims. 1 V
In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate an embodiment of my invention and a modification of the same, Figure 1 is a longitudinal vertical sectional view of the commode. Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view, j and Fig. 3 is a perspective view showing a modified construction. Figs. 4, 5, and 6 are -detail views illustratingseveral features of invention access to the chamber within the casinga for the insertion and removal of the receptacle 1) is obtained through an opening 0 in the front wall thereof, which is normally closed by a hinged door d. Leading through the upper portion of the casing a and in open communication with the compartment therepipe.
mode are thus caused to pass out through the Serial No. 102.092. (N0 model.)
in is a section of piping e, which is designed to be connected up to a suitable chimney by another pipe-section, and in the top of said casing or the seat the'usual opening f is located. When the door d is closed, the pipe 6 and openingf afford the only inlet and outlet tothe interior of said casing, so that when the opening f is left open a circulation of air takes place, as indicated by the arrows, the draft of the chimney drawing air down through said opening f and up through the All odorsand gases within the comchiinney by therdraft thereof and the discharge of the same into the room effectually prevented.
To facilitate the introduction of the receptacle b into the casing a and its removal therefrom, means associated with the door (1 are provided, which expose or carry the same out of said casing when the door d is opened and which carry said receptacle back into proper position within the casing when the door is closed. This means includes a leaf or platform g, pivotally connected at its front end to the door d and provided at its rear edge with an upturned flange g, against which the receptacle 6 rests when placed upon said leaf and which serves to engage with the receptacle when the door is opened to prevent the same slipping or falling off coacts with a slot a, extending from front to rear of a false bottom a within the casing a.
Projecting from the rear wall of the casing a, is a bracket 11, having its front edge curved to conform to the shape of the side of the receptacle b, and this bracket serves to arrest the inward movement thereof and accurately aline the same beneath said openingf.
To prevent the urinary discharge from the person at stool passing over the edge of the receptacle b, a suitable guard is associated with the opening f to act as a deflector in directing said discharge into the same. This guard, as shown, comprises a flange f, depending from the front portion of the edge of said opening and having a slight rearward in clination.
Instead of providing the door d for the insertion of the receptacle b the entire top or seat of the casing a may be hinged, as shown in Fig. 3. As illustrated therein, the seat is hinged to studs 0, held in brackets 19, secured to the upper rear edge of said casing, and upon said studs the cover for the opening in the seat is also hinged.
It is desirable to provide means to automatically place a cover upon the receptacle b when the door d is opened, and for this purpose I have provided a lid-carrier, to be operated by the receptacle in the opening and closing of said door. This carrier comprises a grooved member i shaped to conform to the periphery of the lid and designed to receive the same, and links t" for connecting said member to the rear of the casing, said links being pivoted to the wall of the casing and to the carrier, respectively. WVhen the door is closed, the grooved carrier rests in a perpendicular position in advance of the receptacle 1), with its pivotal counections to the links 2" above the upper edge of said receptacle I), so that as the receptacle is with:
drawn it will strike against the lid held by said carrier and turn the parts into a horizontal position, the lid automatically seating itself upon the bucket. The attendant then has to merely detach the carrier from the lid and remove the receptacle. In placing the receptacle back into the casing its lid is again engaged with the carrier, and as said receptacle is carried rearwardly in the closing of the door the lid will be automatically removed and again assume its position in advance of said receptacle.
Having thus fully described my invention, what is claimed as new, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a device of the class described, an outer casing provided in the top thereof with the seat-opening and a ventilating-opening disposed in different vertical planes, said casing being also provided in the side thereof with a door-covered opening, an inner receptacle having a support adjusted by the door 2. In a commode, the combination with an outer casing having a front opening, a hinged door for closing the same, and an inner removable receptacle, of a leaf pivoted to the door forming a carrier for the receptacle, and means for guiding the leaf during the movement of the door, said means comprising a false bottom having a slot therein and a pin depending from the leaf coacting with said slot, subtantially as described.
3. In a commode, the combination with an outer casing having a front opening, a hinged door for closing the same, and an inner removable receptacle, of a flat leaf pivoted at its front edge to the door forming a carrier for the receptacle and an upwardly-extending flange at the rear of the leaf, providing a guard to prevent the receptacle slipping off the same, substantially as described.
t. In a commode, the combination with a casing having an opening therein, a door for closing the same, and a removable receptacle adapted to be inserted into the casing and removed therefrom through said opening, of a carrier for said receptacle operated by the door, and a bracket extending from the wall of the casing adapted to coact with said receptacle to position the same, substantially as described.
5. In a device of the class described, the combination with the casing having a side opening, a door in such opening, an inner receptacle, and a carrier for said receptacle connected with the door and actuated thereby, of a lid. for the inner receptacle, and a suitably-supported tiltable carrier for said lid arranged to hold the latter in position for being tilted on and off the receptacle through movement of the latter, substantially as set forth.
6. The combination with a commode comprising an outer casing having a doorway therein, a door for closing the same, an inner receptacle and a carrier therefor connected to the door, of a lid for said receptacle, and a carrier for the latter comprising an element adapted to engage the periphery of the lid, and supporting-links therefor pivotally connected to said element and to the casing, respectively, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
JOHN N. MCGREW.
