UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM A. V. PORTER, OF NEW YORK, N. 'Y.
HOLDER FOR MATCH-BOXES.
SPECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent N 0. 726,569, dated April 28, 1903. Application filed August 26. 1902. Serial No. 121,030- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern: A
Be it known that I, WILLIAM AV. PORTER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the borough of Manhattan, in the city and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Holders for Match- Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention has for its object to provide certain improvements in holders for matchboxes whereby each of the holders may be formed from a single blank of sheet metal, which holder will be strong, light, and inexpensive to manufacture and which may be made without the use of rivets or other fastoning devices.
A further object is to provide a match-box holder comprising a tray and a branch or arm projecting therefrom bent to form the boxsupport and a cigar-rack.
A further object is to so arrange the parts that the support for the match-box will be located above and at one side of the ash-tray, so as to leave the ash-tray clear of all obstructions, the cigar-rack being located over the said ash-tray.
A practical embodiment of my invention is represented in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents the match-box holder in side elevation supporting a box of matches, the position of a cigar being shown in dotted lines in the cigar-rack. Fig. 2 is a front View of the same. Fig. 3 isa vertical central section through the holder. Fig. 4 is a rear view of the holder, and Fig. 5 is a plan view of the blank from which the holder is formed.
The blank from which the match box holder is formed comprises a central portion 1, from which the ash-tray is formed, and a branch 2, projecting from the edge thereof, from which the box-support and the cigarrack are formed.
The match-box herein represented comprises a tubular casing 3, within which the body portion 4 of the box is fitted to slide.
The match-box holder is formed as follows: The central portion 1.0f the blankis stamped to form an ash-tray 5. The branch 2 of the blank is bent to form an upwardly-extended portion 6, a laterally-extended portion 7, and
a downwardly extended portion 8. I This forms a support for the match-box, the laterally-extended portion 7 of the tongue serving to force the body portion 4 of the box upwardly when the support is inserted into the lower portion of the casing 3 thereof. When the match-box is in position on the support, the bottom of the casing 3 rests upon shoulders 9 and 10, formed on the vertical portion 6 of the support. The free end of the branch 2 is curved inwardly and upwardly as it leaves the depending portion 8 of the support to form a cigar-rack 11, located over the ashtray 5.
The match-box holder, as above described, may be formed from a single blank of sheet metal, thus rendering it very light and strong and inexpensive to manufacture.
By locating the support for the match-box above and at one side of the tray I am enabled to leave the tray unobstructed except for the cigar-rack located over the same.
It is evident that the several parts may be made in varying shapes and sizesandl from any suitable material without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention. Hence I do not Wish to limit myself strictly to the form herein set forth; but
What I claim is--- 1. A match-box holder comprising a single blank formed into an ash-tray, a box-support and a cigar-rack.
2. A match-box holder comprising an ashtray and a box-support formed from a single blank of sheet metal.
3. A match-box holder comprising an ashtray, a box-support and a cigar-rack formed from a single blank of sheet metal.
4. A match-box holder comprising an ashtray and a single branch projecting from the edge thereof formed into a box-support above and at one side of the ash-tray.
5. A match-box holder comprising an ash= tray anda branch projecting from its edge, said branch being bent to form a box-support above and at one side of the ash-tray and a cigar-rack over the ash-tray.
6. A match-box holder comprising an ashtray, a branch projecting from the edge of the ash-tray, said branch being bent to form an upwardlyextended portion, a laterally-extended portion and a downwardly-extended portion forming a box-support and an inwardly and upwardly extended portion forming a cigar-rack.
5 7. A match-box holder comprising an ashtray, a branch proj eating from the edge thereof, said branch being bent to form an upwardly-extended portion, a laterally-extended portion and a downwardly-extended por- 1: tion forminga box-support,the said upwardlyextended portion having shoulders forming a stop for the box.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of two witnesses, this 19th day of August, 15
