DIXON LEWERS, OF'LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY, ASSIGNOR T01 FERGUSON dE-LEWERS, OF SAME PLACE.
Letters PatentNo. 72,648, dated December 24, 1867.
IMPROVEMENT IN STAVE-MAGEINE.
TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN;
Be it known that I, DIXON LEWERS, of Louisville, Jefi'erson county,-State of Kentucky, have invented a new and useful Stave'Machine; and do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and enact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification.
This invention relates to a machine for forming at one operation the convex outer and concave inner side of staves for casks, tubs, barrels, &o.
Figure 1 is a partially-sectionized elevation of a stave-machine embodying my invention.
Figure 2 is a horizontal section taken at the line X X, fig. 1.
Figure 3 is an enlarged section throughv the line Y Y, fig. .2.
. A is a horizontal bench or.way, upon which the rough stave is placed, and along which it is pushed and g-uidedin the act of planing. B is the stave-pusher or driver, caused to advance and recede along the bench A, (the receding motion being about twice as; fast as the advancing motion,) by the following means: C is the driving-shaft, carrying'a fiy-wheel, D, whose stud or wrist d is provided with a dove-tailed head, E, which occupies a corresponding slot,f, in a revolving arm, F, whose shaftf is eccentric to. the driving-shaft C, aforesaid. Aeonsequence of this eccentricity is that the head E rotating the arm F, travels toward and from the centrethereof, once-during each rotation, causing an alternate acceleration and retardation of the rotation, as before stated. The other end of the shaftf" carries an arm, Gr, having a dove-tailed slot, g, provided with a wrist, H, capable of being secured at any desired distance froin the centre of rotation of said arm, according'to the desired stroke of the driver. The wrist H is connected to one end of a pitman, I, and the other end of said pitman is attached to the rear end of the driver 13 by nie'ans of another wrist, J. K and L are two stationary knives, which serve to reduce the stuff to a definite width and thickness. M M are guide-strips, which hold the stave to a rectilinear path. NN' N N are rollers, which are caused, by means of springs 0, attached to their housings h, to hold the stud with a downward but yielding pressure. A portion of the bench is excavated at a, to receive the blades of a rounding-cutter, P, journalled athwart an d.beneath the bench. Journalled longitudinally over the bench, in housings R, slotted r, so as to be adjustable in height, is ahollowing cutterhead, S. I
I claim herein as new,'and of my invention- The stave-pusher or driver 13, when operated by the wheel D, head E, revolving slotted arm F, shai'tf,
arm G, and pitman I, or their equivalents, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony of which invention, I hereunto set my hand.
DIXON LEWERS.
