IMPROVEMENT IN PLANINMACHINE.
The Schedule referred to in these Lettera Patent and making part o`f the same.
ment of the elastic pressersin combination with theI endless platform with sunk beds, as hereinafter described.
The object of my invention is to reduce, at one operation, a number of .shingles of diferent thicknesses to a uniform thickness, at the same time giving them a planed, even surface on one side, and the required bevel.'
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
Figure 1` represents a side elevationof a machine, embodying myinventiou.
Figure 2 represents a plan of the same.
same.
Similar letters in the dii'erent figures indicate corresponding parts.
1n the construction of my improved machinec represents the frame, vof the, required strength to resist the vibrations of the operating parts.'v
b is the driving-shaft, from which motion is communicated to the working parts.
c is the rotary cylinder, which is provided with cutters in the usual manner. On one end of said shaft is secured the pulley d, whichl connects, by means of va belt, with the' pulley e secured to the driving-shaft b.
. y This rotary cylinder c is provided, near each end,
with stands which are adjustable, whereby it may be adjusted so that the cutters `will cutany depth oi' chip required.
f f f f are elastic pressers, which are hung and operate on the shaft g, separately, the feet of which are provided with spindles, around which pass suit- 'able springs, h h, said spindles operating in and through the frame i, the top part of the springs bearing against washers, which come in 'contact with the bottom part of the frame i.
Located in the rear of this frame i is the pressure feed-roll y'.
k and Z are shafts, towhich are secured the chainpulleys m and m', around which operates the endless l'latform n; said platform being formed of logs, which are provided with sunk beds, n.
Figure 3 represents a longitudinal section ofthe Secured to the lshaft k is the pulley 0, which con` neet-s with the pulley p by means of a belt; said pulley p being` secured to the countershaft q, motion being communicated to the salnefrom the driviug-shaft b, by means of the cone-pulley lr and s.
tis a feed-roll, located in front of thel rotary cylinder c, its object-being to feed the uished shingles from the cutters.
The shinglesto be planed are placed on the endless .platform af, in the sunk beds a n formed in the logs a u;- a wholelog, e, being placed between each of .said beds n n, the thin ends of which pointing toward the rotary cylinder c, the thick part resting against the edge of the whole log c, carrying them toward the pressure feed-roll j, which, with the assistance of the platform n', feeds or brings the same in under the elasticprcssers .fff each presser having a separate shingle to hold inposition While heilig operated upon -by the'rotary cylinder c, with cutters. .Atterbeing operated upon, by aid of the feed-rollt, they are fed from the same, with one side nished, and at the same time all of the same thickness.
While one row of shingles is being operated upon, another row is being prepared by a similar process, as heretofore described.
By this operation, it will be seen that shingles of different thicknesses may be operated upon with the same eiiect asif they were all of the same thickness, as the elastic pressers f f f f will adapt themselves separately to each shingle operated upon, and, when iinished, be all of the same thickness.
Another important feature in connection with the elastic pressers ffff, is the sunk beds n n, they being so constructed and formed that whenthe shingles are placed on the same, their top surface will he parallel with the top ofthe frame a, and when operated upon by the cutters, they heilig adjustable, the taper of the vshingles is preserved and their surfaces are finished oli" true and smooth with despatch.
I am aware that the elastic pressers, and other parts ofthe machine are in use. l, therefore, lay no claim to them .when used separately; but
What I do claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
.'lhe arrangement of the elastic pressers f f f f, in combination with the endless platform n', with sunk beds n n., all. when arranged and operating as described.
, .TERUME B. BROWN.
