CHIMNEY PROTECTOR. APPLICATION FILED KAY 17,1902.

WILLIAM I. F. I-IARDEN, OF HARTFORD, KANSAS.
CHIMNEY-PROTECTOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters PatentNq. 726,1 60, datedApri121, 1903.
I Application filed May 17,1902. Serial No. 107,852. (No model.)
To ctZl whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, WILLIAM I. F. HARDEN,
' a citizen of the United States, residing at Hartford, in the county of Lyon and State of Kan: sas, have invented certain new and useful Im provements in Chimney-Protectors; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to chimney-protectors and is in the nature of an improvement on my Patent No. 469,069, issued to me February 16, 1892.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple, durable, and efficient chimney-protector in such form that it will be convenient for shipment and can be readily attached to chimney-tops of varying sizes and'shapes by a person of ordinary intelligence'without' tector complete, applied in the operative position to a chimney-top. Fig. 2 is a modification showing difierent means for securing my protector to a chimney. Fig. 3 is a detail view of one of the bands. Fig. 4 is a detail view of means for adjusting the protector to a chimney.
Similar reference-figures denote similar parts throughout the several views of the drawings.
In practice I provide a series or plurality of metal bands 1, bent and applied to a chimney-top at points above, on,'and. below the bulge or flange thereof in such a manner as to form three continuous horizontal bands encompassing the chimney-top at said points. These bands are preferably of such width as to cover the joint between two courses of brick and are provided with outstanding ears or flanges 2, having apertures 3, through which pass screw-bolts 4, by means of which the bands may be tightened or loosened, as desired. I also employ an additional .series of four or more metal plates or hands 5, bent so as to form a hook onone end of each band, and this hooked portion of the band is hung over the chimney-top with the shorter of its vertical arms extending down inside the chimney. The other and longer arms of the hooked band extend downwardly outside the "chimney, being bent to conform to the conformation thereof, and are secured by rivets or other means to the lowermost of the e11- compassing horizontal bands. These four vertical bands are placed one upon each side of the chimney-top and besides being secured to the uppermost and lowermost 0f the horizontal bands are secured or riveted to the central encompassing band, thus insuring additional security.- Where desirable, the up- .per of the encompassing bands may be provided with a series of angle-plates, either cast integral therewith or secured by rivets or other means, and it will be seen that the combination and arrangement described forms a .frame or hood surrounding the chimney-top of exceptionals'trength, said-frame or hood adjusting means are formed, as seen in the drawings.
. In themodification shown by Fig. 2 wire staples and coupling-plates instead of screw- It is obvious; that various other minor'changes may be made in my invention without departing from the spirit thereof, and I wish it to be understood that I do not limit myself to the details as show and described in this application.
It will be further apparent that the bands or strips used in the construction of my chimney protector, being formed or cut direct from sheet metal in straight strips of desired lengths, which are then punched, ready for bending by pliers or other means and application to chimneys of various shapes and sizes, are in extremely convenient form for shipment, as a large number can be nested in comparatively small space.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a device of the character described, the combination of a plurality of metal strips or hands surrounding and secured to a chimney-top, those forming connections between others being each formed of a lower and an upperstep-like portion, means securing said strips together so as to form a frame or hood, and means for adjusting said hood or frame to the chimney-top, substantially as set forth.
2. In a chimney-top protector, the combination of the horizontal and vertical bands forming a hood or frame, means for adjusting said hood or frame to a chimney-top, and
means for securing the same thereto, substantially as set forth.
3. In a chimney-top protector, the combination of vertical and horizontal bands forming a frame or hood, and means for adjusting said frame or hood to a chimney-top, the upper said horizontal bands being provided with a series of angle-plates adapted to clamp the chimney-top, substantially asset forth.
4. In a chimney-top protector, the combination of series of bands adapted to be applied to a chimney, those effecting connection between others being each formed of a step-like portion, substantially as set forth.
5. In a chimney-protector, the combination of a series of bands adapted to be applied to a chimney, those effecting connection between others being each formed of a step-like portion, and means for effecting the adjustment of said parts to the chimney, substantially as set forth.
G. In a chimney-protector, the combination of a series of bands adapted to be applied to a chimney, those effecting connection between others being each formed of a step-like portion, and one or more of the connected-up bands comprising sections adapted to be adj ustably connected together, substantially as set forth.
7. In a chimney-protector, the combination of a series of bands adapted to be applied to a chimney, those effecting connection between others being each formed of a lower and an upper step-like portion, substantially as set forth.
8. In a chimney-protector, the combination of a series of bands adapted to be applied to a chimney, those eifectin g connection between others being each formed of a lower and an upper step-like portion, and one or more of the connected-up bands comprising sections adjustably connected together, substantially as set forth.
9. In achimney-protector, the combination of a series of bands adapted to be applied to a chimney, thosebands eifecting connection between others being each formed of a lower and an upper step-like portion, with the upper or free end portions of said connecting-bands bent or extended downwardly to engage the flue-surface of the chimney, substantially as set forth.
10. In a chimney-protector, the combination of a series of bands adapted to be applied to a chimney, those bands effecting connection between others being each formed of a lower and an upper step-like portion, with the upper or free end portion of said connecting-bands bent or extended downwardly into the flue-surface of the chimney, and one or more of the connected-up bands comprising sections adjustably connected together, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature I in presence of two witnesses.
