To all whom t may concern.-
Be it known that I, FREDERIC MARTIN, Jr., a citizen of the United States, residing at Columbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented a `certain new and useful Improvement in Rubbing-Surfaces for Washboards, of which the following is a speciiication.
My invention relates to the improvement of rubbing-surfaces for washboards; and the objects of my invention are to provide a washboard rubbing-surface of improved construction and to so form my improved rubbingsurface as to present a desirable arrangement of frictional rubbingY projections which will greatly facilitate the cleansing of the material rubbed thereon. These objects I accomplish in the manner illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a face View of a washboard having my improved rubbing-surface. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal section of the same, and Fig. 3 is a detail view in perspective of a portionof said rubbing-surface.
Similar numerals refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
In carrying out Inyinvention lI employ a suitable washboard-frame, which may be of the usual form, (indicated at 1.) Mounted in this frame between the side frame-pieces and between the upper and lower cross-pieces 2 is my improved rubbing-plate 3, of the form hereinafter described. This rubbing-plate, which is ofr zinc or other suitable material, has formed throughout its length a plurality of parallel and adjoining rows of oblong projections 4, the upper end of'one of these projections extendingoutward from the base of the next higher projection, thereby forming the successively-arranged Vshoulders 5. In
the arrangement of the rows of projections 4. the top or shoulder portions' 5 of the projections n one'rowarefbr'ought opposite the centers of the lengths of 'the corresponding projections of the rows on either side thereof, thus bringing the shoulders or heads of the projections of the alternate rows in transverse` alinement. y Asgaresulthof; the successiveprojections and thefalterpate arrangement'of; the sameabovedescribed it is obvious thatthe spa-ce between `the upper portionsof two equal-heightrprojections 4 and above ythefshoulder portion 5' of L the intermediate projection will '..form a 4water-receiving recess AandY that; these recesses are thereby broughtinto diagonalalinement and communication. f
It will be `observedby referringto the drawings that the herein-described rubbing or frictional'proje'ctions are angular in longitudinal section, the upper and front faces of each projection being fiat, thus distinguishing the same from rounded projections, various forms of which have been employed heretofore.
It is obvious that I may form the rubbingplate with the straight rear side," which is indicated in Fig. 2, or by the usualprocess of indenting the body of the sheet or plate. (Indicated in Fig. 3.)
From the construction whichl have herein shown and described it will-readily be seen that a simple and eective form of rubbingsurface is producedfwhich through the formation and relative arrangement of its frictional projections andwater-receptacles will greatly facilitate the thoroughxcl'eansing of the material which isbrought'intofrictional contact therewith. s g
Having now fully describedmyinvention, what I claim, and desire'to secure -by-ll`etters Patent, isl A Washboard rubbing-plate comprising a plate-body'havin g formed therein parallel longitudinal rows of separated friction projections, the projections of one of said longitudinal rows breaking joint withV tliiprojections of the adjoining rows and each of saidi projections being formed with flat outer side and upper end surfaces which meetapproxim'ately at right angles, substantially asfspecied. i
