Be it known that'I, MORRIS M.HEDDEN,' a

citizen of the United States, residing at Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ourtain-Stretchers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to curtain-stretchers,

and more particularly to that class of stretchers which providefor the disassembling'of the various parts and also for the adjustment of the curtain-attaching members to accommodate curtains of different sizes.

The object of my invention is to provide a curtain-stretcher in which the various parts thereof are quickly and conveniently connected and which when connected form a most rigid and substantial'structure capable of adjustment to accommodate curtains of different sizes.

Another object is to provide a device of this character which can be conveniently dismem bored and packed into a very compact space and which is durable, light, and of cheap construction.

As shown in the drawings, provision has also been made for using the device as a quilting-frame, and it is therefore to be understood that this invention is also particularly adapted for a quilting-frame or other similar 7 4 is a longitudinal section, on an enlarged scale, taken on line-4 4, Fig. 2. Referring to the drawings .in detail, like numerals of reference refer to like parts in the several figures.

The numeral 1 designatesthe frame, consisting of side bars or members 2 and end bars or membersi3. The side members are of considerable length, and for convenience in handling and storing they are each made of two parts. of equal lengthsand hinged together, as at 4. The adjacent ends of the two parts of eachside member have coinciding grooves 5,-formed in the sides thereof at their hinged ends, and in these grooves a pivoted keeper 6 is confined when the two parts are openedout. These'keepers are piv- '0tally secured inthe grooves 'of-one part of the side members and each is capable of being swungv in the coinciding groove of the other part of the side member whenextended, thereby serving to hold said members rigid and-prevent the parts thereof from closing.

,Each side member 2 is provided on its under side and near the ends thereof with T- shaped grooves 7, which are arranged lengthwise thereof and extend to Within a short distance of the hinged point thereof. The inner end of each groove is enlarged at the point in line with the stem portion of the T- shaped groove, as at 8, to a size equal in width to the-cap portion of the said groove, and through this enlarged portion of the groove the head of a bolt 9 is passed to guide the same into the wide portion of the groove, and

thus prevent the withdrawal of the bolt, except at the inner end of the groove.

The end members 3 of the frame are each provided with slotslO, arranged lengthwise thereof and extending from a point near its end to a point near the center of the same.

The bolts 9, which project from the T- shaped grooves, pass through the slots 10, and each engages an internally threaded socket 11, secured to the upper end of a supporting-leg 12, of whichthere are fourin number. It is therefore intelligible that the side and end members of the frame can be moved, one with reference to the other, within the range of the grooves 7 and slots 10, and after being adjusted to the desired position the leg may be revolved, which securely binds the parts together.

If desired and as illustrated in modified form, the supporting-legs 12 maybe dispensed with, and in lieu thereof the usual thumb-nuts 13 may be used to lock the members of the frame in the desired position.

As is further illustrated, the frame may be arranged in the form of an easel. In such cases only two supporting-legs are necessary, and the slots formed in the end members are enlarged or grooved on opposite sides thereof, as at 14, to form inclined bearing-surfaces 15, against which the heads of the bolts 16 bear. Each bolt is curved and enters a socket secured to the upper end of one of the supporting-legs, and thus the frame is set at an angle to the supporting-legs.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. A curtain stretcher comprising side members, end members having slots arranged lengthwise therein, said slots being enlarged or grooved on opposite sides to form inclined bearing-surfaces, a bolt passing through each of said slots and having its head bearing against the inclined bearing-surfaces thereof,

and supporting-legs having each a threaded socket adapted for engagement with said bolts, substantially as set forth.

2. A curtain stretcher comprising side members, end members having slots arranged lengthwise therein, said slots being enlarged or grooved on opposite sides to form inclined bearing-surfaces, a bolt passing through each of said slots and having its head bearing against the inclined bearing-surfaces thereof, supporting legs having each a threaded socket adapted for engagement with said bolts, and clamping-bolts held in the side members and passing through the slots in the end members to securely hold the two together, substantially as set forth.

3. A curtain stretcher comprising side members, each having'a T-shaped groove arranged lengthwise therein and each groove having one of its ,ends enlarged, end members ha ving apertures, bolts held slidahly in said grooves and arranged to project through the apertures in the end members, and clamping means for holding said bolts and the members of the frame together, the said enlargements in the grooves being designed to permit the heads of the bolts to be inserted in said grooves and to be withdrawn therefrom, substantially as set forth.
