To all whom, it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILLIAM D. Nnrns, a citizen of the United States, residing at Davenport, in the county of Scott and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ironing-Boards, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to an improvement in ironing boards and one of the objects of the present invention is the provision of an improved device of this nature, the various parts of which can be folded to a compact form to permit storage of the ironing board when not in use.

A further object of the present invention is the provision of an improved device of this character in which there is provided in conjunction with the main ironing board, an auxiliary sleeve board, in combination with means for supporting the auxiliary sleeve board of such a character that the auxiliary board may be supported in a plane above the main board when it is desired to use the same; that it may be folded down against the main board when not in use; and that it may be moved out of the way of the main board when itis desired to use the main board alone.

A further object of the present invention is the provision of a board of this character provided with an auxiliary board which is adapted when not in use to lie flat against the top of the main board, a supporting member which is adapted, when not'in use to lie flat against the under side of the main board, and means for connecting the auxiliary board and the supporting member to hold the parts in their folded posit-ion.

Other objects of the invention will be apparent from the detailed description hereinafter, when read in connection with the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof, wherein a convenient embodiment of the invention is illustrated and wherein like characters of reference refer to similar parts in the several views.

In the drawings: Figure 1 is a side elevation of the ironing board with the parts ex tended for use; Fig. 1" is a side elevation of the inner end of the ironing board, with the su plemental board raised to a vertical position, parts being shown in section; Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the device with the parts in the position shown in Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view of the board with the parts in their folded positions.

Referring now more particularly to the drawings, A designates the main ironing board of the device which may be of any desired type. Associated with the inner end of the board A is means enabling this end of the board to be clamped to the edge of a table or other fixed member. In the embodi ment of the invention illustrated, such means comprises a pair of clamping members B B which are hingedly connected at the inner ends thereof to the underside of the board A and the outer ends of which are provided with suitable clamping portions which are adapted to cooperate with the underside of the board A to clamp the edge of a table or other suitable member therebetween. Depending from the board A and passing through the clamping members 13 are suitable screws B upon the lower ends of which are threaded clamping nuts B which are adapted to underlie the clamping members B. I-Iingedly connected to the underside of the board A between theends thereof is a supporting member or leg 0. The leg C in the embodiment of the invention illustrated, comprises an upper portion which is hingedly connected to the board A and is formed of separated side pieces 0 0 between which is slidably mounted a leg member C. Any suitable means may be employed for clamping the leg member C in any desired position of vertical adjustment, and in. the embodiment of the invention illustrated, such member is provided with a longitudinal slot 0' through which a suitable clamping bolt 0 projects from the upper portion of the supporting member or leg, a clamping nut 0 being threaded upon said clamping screw and overlying the outer surface of the leg member 0. Secured to the block E which is carried by the link D adjacent the inner end of the board and projecting forwardly therefrom so as to overlie the other block B, when. the links are elevated, is a small auxiliary or sleeve board F. Pivotally secured to the upper surface of the board A is a latch member a which is adapted to be moved in front of one of the links D after said links have been moved to their elevated position, said latch serving to lock the auxiliary or sleeve board in its elevated position, Vhen the latch is withdrawn the links can be swung to permit the lowe *ing of the auxiliaryboard to a position where it will rest directly upon the upper surface of the board It. .l'hen the auxiliary board is thus lowered the blocks E i carried by the links D will move into the opening A which is provided in the inner end of the board A. By reason of the pivotal connection of the blocks ld i l with each other, it will be noted that when desired, the auxiliary board. F may be moved to a vertical position, shown in Fig. 1 so as to provide free access to the entire surface of the main board A.

Pivotally secured to the block E to which the auxiliary board F is secured, and depending therefrom is a U-shaped bail G which is adapted when the parts of the board are in their folded positions to embrace the free end of the leg member and to thus hold all of the parts securely locked in their folded positions. in order to effect the engagement of the bail G with the end of the leg member C, such leg member is first adjusted upwardly to enable the same to clear the bail as the supporting leg C is moved against the underside of the board it and is then moved outwardly to cause the free end thereof to enter the bail. The leg is then clamped in this position, which holds the parts against n'iovement until the leg member C is again shifted longitudinally to move the same out of engagement with the bail G.

l/Vhile a convenient embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, it will be understood that many changes may be made to the particular form and construction therein shown without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.

I claim 1. In a device of the character described, a

main ironing board, a supplemental ironing board adapted when in folded position to lie alongside of the main ironing board, means for supporting the supplemental ironing board above the main ironing board, a supporting member connected to the main board and adapted to fold against the underside thereof when not in use, and means depending from the supplemental ironing board and adapted to embrace the supporting memher when the parts are in their folded posi tions.

2. ln a device of the character described, a main ironing board, a supplel'i'iental ironing board adapted when in folded position to lie alongside of the main ironing board, means for supporting the supplemental ironing board above the main ironing board, a longitudinally adjustable supporting leg connected to the main ironing board and adapt ed to fold against the underside thereof when not in use, and a bail depending from the supplemental ironing board and adapted to embrace the free end of said leg when the parts are in their folded positions.

3. In a device of the character described, a main ironing board, a pair of spaced upwardly extending links having their lower ends pivotally connected to said main iron ing board, a pair of members pivotally supported upon the upper portions of said links and pivotally connected to each other intermediate the links, and a supplemental ironing board secured to one of said members.

In a device of the character described, a main ironing board, a pair of spaced U- shaped supporting links pivotally connected at their lower ends to the main ironing board, a pair of blocks pivotally supported upon the upper portion of said links, the ad jacent faces of said blocks being adapted to abut when the links are in their elevated positions, a pivotal connection between the adjacent portions of said blocks, and a supplemental ironing board rigidly secured to the upper surface of one of said blocks and adapted to rest upon the upper surface of the other of said blocks when in its normal position.

5. in a device of the character described, a main ironing board provided with an open ing in the inner end thereof, a supplemental ironing board, supporting means therefor comprising a pair of spaced links having their lower ends pivotally connected to said main ironing board at the sides of the opening therein, a supporting leg hingedly connected to the underside of said main ironing board and foldable to a position against the underside thereof, and a bail pivoted to the supplemental ironing board and adapted to embrace the free end of said supporting leg when the parts are in their folded positions.
