Description
DANIEL `HYRE, OFv UNION, OHIO.'
Letters Patent No. 72,496, dated December 24, 1867.
IMPROVED WELL-REPRlGBRATOR.
tte dphule maar tu in tipa Etnias @anni aut mating mi tt the stmt.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Bc it known that I, DANIEL HYBE, of Union, in the county of Montgomery, in the State of Ohio, have invented a new and improved device to preserve articles of food during the warm weather, and to which I give the title of Well-Refrigerator; and I do hereby declare that the followingis afull and eXac-t description thereof, reference being had to theaccompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature ofmy invention consists in the use of a windlass, suitably constructed and arranged, and to which a vessel like a safe or cupboard is attached, and is held suspended in a well, and by which it is raised or lowered, as it is desired, the object being to keep articles of food cool, and thereby' preserve them.
To enable othersV skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
The figure represents the well-refrigerator in perspective.
B is designedvto represent the platform of a well, which has an opening of sufficient size to admit of the passagethroughit of the cupboard D. This opening of the platform is closed by .two doors, one of which, C, is
shown, and which are sustained by hinges s, and which open in opposite directions. On the platform are attached two base-pieces P P, which support the frame A, which is braced by four braces, the braces r r being antagonized. The roller E has its bearings near the top of the frame, the shaft of which extends through to the part of the frames, and on this shaft is the cog-wheel K, which gears into the cog-wheel L, to the shaft R of which the crank M is attached. H, a pawl which drops into the cog-wheel K. lF is a rubber or frictionblock attached to the screw G, which works withinla. nut attached to the frame, and by which screw the requisite pressure is made on the roller, by which means less effort is required'of the attendant when letting the cupboard down into the well. The cupboard is constructed with shelves, and the doors and back are closed with perforated tin. The doors are supported on hingespp, and are held closed by the buttons o o. lt is suspended by cords n n, attached to the roller. The form of` cupboard may be very variable, and adapted to the particular uses made of it. I
Operation.
After placing the viands within the cupboard, the pawl serving to hold it up, the friction-block is made sufficiently tight on the roller. The doors of the platform arc then opened, and the pawl being removed, the attendant taking the crank, regulates the descent into the well, and, when sufficiently low, the pawl is replaced, and the doors of the platform closed. To raise the cupboard, the friction-block is withdrawn, and by the crank it is carried up, and in its ascent opens the doors.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, s
The combination and arrangement, in a well-refrigerator, of the severalyparts, viz, platform B, with doors C, frame A, cupboard D, roller E, wheels K and L, crank M, cords n n. nawl h, and friction-block F, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.'
DANIEL HYRE.
