TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN: v v
Be it known that I, A. S. KINNEAR, of Volga', in thecounty of Jeiersonfand vState of Indiana, have invented a new anduseful Improvement in Sca'olds; and I do hereby declarethat the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereofwhich will enable those s being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of -this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in so constructing and arranging two or mor thatthey will rest against a vertial side of a building or other construction, being supported from below A by beams, psliding upon each other in the direction of theirlengths, and working through thimbles to prevent any side pla-y, the upper bar being piroted in the angle of the frame. The frames are provided with rollers'on their vertical sides to lessentho friction. 'lhe horizontal sides act as supports for the llooring of the scaifold. By a system of cords and pulleys or sheaves, in connection with suitable gearing and cranks, the scaffold may be raised or lowered at pleasure by persons on it or on the ground.
I will now proceed to describe the construction and operation of my invention.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the scaffold, showing it.raised against a wall.
Figure 2 is a front elevation of the same.
' Figure 3 is designed to show the ratchet and pawl in elevation.
Figure 4 is a sectional view on a smaller scale, designed to show au arrangement of the cords and pulleys by which the scaffold may be raised or lowered by persons onthe scaffold and on the ground at the same time.

A is the wall, B B are the vertical and horizontal sides of the frame, and C the diagonal braces. D D aro metal plates, at the corners, to'strengthen the frame, and also to act as a` bearing for thc pivot-bolts. cl d 'are rollers, lct into the vertical side B. are the planks, forming the flooring. E E are beams, which slide upon The end of. the beam, resting on the ground, is shod with metal, w, while the upper end of theother is strapped with metal, and hinges on the bolt c. a is the rope,- which is fastened at f, passes down 'through lgrooves in the beams, around the sheave g, thence upward around the sheave 7:, which is attached to the beam by means of the thimble b, thence to the shaft y, which is suspended by hangers from the end of B. 'lhe spnr-wheellh; on the end of the shaft y, meshes with the pinion above. The crank, m, is on 'the pinion-shaft. n o show the pawl and ratchet on the other end of the pinion-shaft.
` In iig. 4 it will be seen that a pulley or sheave has been plu-ced on the bolt c, and another ntf, also a shaft,
Z, on which is the crank x. tis a-staple, under which the rope passes, and l is a knot or obstruction in the rope to prevent its passing under. i
' Operation.
Two or more sca'olds or supports are placed against the wall, as in tig. 1 and tig. 2. The dooring-boards are placed on as shown, and, if necessary, held in position by hook-bolts.` If ther-ope is arranged, las in rigs 1 and 2, the workman places himself at the crank m, and, by turning, raises himself and the scaffold to the necessary height. A reverse operation, Aof course, lowers the scaffold to the ground. If but one workman is on the scaifold, he should operate alternately on the several cranks, so as t'o aro-id raising one end faster than the other. By the arrangement shown in iig. 4, the scali-'old may be raised or lowered from the top, bott-om, or both simultaneously. The ratchet-operates to prevent its going down again when once raised.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The construction and arrangement of the frame B B, diagonal braces with'the sliding beams EE, thmblcs e e, sheaves fg c k, cord a, gearingh, pawl u, ratchet o, cranks m x, and
substantially as and for the purposes specified.
