Be it known that I, SAMUEL HERBERT MAL- PAS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Automatic Gas- Lighters, of which the following is a specification.

My said invention relates to an apparatus forautomaticallyignitinggas-jets; audit consists in the construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter particularly described and claimed.

Referring to" the accompanying drawings, which are made a part hereof, and on which similar reference characters indicate similar parts, Figure l is a side elevation of an automatic gas-lighter embodying my said invention, a portion of the handle-rod being broken away; Fig. 2, a central sectional view thereof, the shield being omitted and (for pu rposes of clearness) its position being indicated by means of dotted lines only; Fig. 3, a detail sectional view on the dotted line 3 3 in Fig. 1, and Fig. 4 a detail sectional View on the dotted line 4 4.

This device has a handle-rod 1, preferably in the form of a metal rod or heavy wire, which terminates in the grip 2, which is commonly made of wood. The opposite end of said handle-rod extends to one side and is securely united to a hublike portion 3, which forms the base of the lighter proper. At the point where it is bout a yoke-piece at is secured, which is of a suitable form to engage with and operate the gas-keyin turning on and shutting off the-gas. This part 4 has a central perforation, down through which the handle-rod 1 extends, and it may be secured rigidly in place by any suitable means, as by a rivet 5. It also preferably has a projection 6, which is adapted to hook over a nail or pin when the gas-lighter is hung up, this serving to confine the nail or pin to a point next to the handle-rod.

The hub-like portion 3 has a central perforation to receive he base of the lighting device,which I have denominated a cartridge. This cartridge is composed of this base 7, a

standard 8, and a wire ,or filament 9, extending from the base to an arm on the upper end of the standard and at a little distance from the body of said standard, as shown, this fine wire or filament being composed of a peculiar metal and having secured thereon particles 10 of a peculiar chemical composition, said composition being of such a character that when the apparatus is inserted in a flow of ordinary illuminating-gas such a chemical action will take place as will ignite the gas.

This lighter or cartridge is inclosed and protected by a shield ll, which is in form a shell of suitable size containing numerous perforations and open at one end. This open end or neck is of a size and form adapted to fit over the hub 3 and be there secured by a screw 12, which passes through the neck of this shield and into the screw-threaded perforation in said hub 3, its point impinging against the cartridge and serving as a setscrew to hold it in place. In operation when the filament becomes destroyed this screw is simply removed, when both the shield can be taken ofi and the cartridge taken out, the cartridge renewed and the shield replaced, all as will be readily understood. In an apparatus of this character a shield is highly necessary, as the igniting-filament is small and slender, ofslight strength, and consequently, unless protected,will become broken very frequently and the usefulness of the apparatus thus destroyed, while when protected by such ashield it will under ordinary circumstances last for a considerable period and when it fails or becomes broken is easily removed. At the same time, while the shield is to be removable for the purposes stated, it should be so securely mounted as not to be easily taken ofi by merely curious persons, as such removals and replacements endanger the delicate filaments. The screw 12 is therefore driven in quite tightly.
