UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
ELMER DAYTOL TUTHILL, OE MATTITUOK, NEIV YORK.
WlCK-ADJ USTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 590,426, dated September 21, 1897.
Application filed April 26, 1897. Serial No. 633,878. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ELMER DAYTON TUT- HILL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mattituck, in the county of Suffolk and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tick-Adjusters, of which the following is a full and complete specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to wick-adjusters for use in connection with torches, lamps, and similar devices; and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class which is especially adapted for use in connection with lamps, torches, or similar devices which employ cylindrical wicks.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which the separate parts of myimprovement are designated by the same numerals of reference in each of the views, and in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of the wick-tube of a lamp or torch provided with my improvement; Fig. 2, a side elevation, partly in section, at right angles to that of Fig. 1; and Fig. 3, a section on the line 3 3 of Fig.1.
In the drawings forming part of this specification I have shown at 5 the upper part of a lamp-reservoir or other vessel, which is provided with a cylindrical wick-tube 6, and the inner diameter of the upper end of said tube is greater than the diameter of the lower portion thereof, and in the practice of my invention I form in upper part of said wick-tube a rectangular oblong slot or opening 7, which extends nearly to the top thereof. I also mount in the upper portion of the wick-tube 6 a vertically-movable wick-carrying tube 10, which is composed of spring metal and open at one side, as shown at 11, and formed centrally of the opposite sides of the slot or opening 11 in the tube 10 are .tubular keepers 12, which project through the slot or opening 7 in the tube 6, and I also provide a wick-adjusting handle or device which consists of a spring-yoke 13, which is preferably composed of strong springwire, the central portion of which is open to form a ring or loop 14, and the ends of the sides of the yoke 13 are bent backwardly, as shown at 15, and passed through the keepers 12 and secured therein.
The wick 16 is carried by the tube 10, and the inner diameter of said tube 10 is the same as that of the lower portion of the tube 6, and in the normal position of the parts the side walls of the tube 10 press against the inner walls of the tube 6, so as to hold the wickcarrying tube 10 in any desired position, and
whenever itis desired to raise or lower the they maybe grasped by the thumb and finger, b ut I prefer the construction herein shown and described, in which the spring-yoke 13 is employed.
This device is simple in construction and operation and is perfectly adapted to accomplish the result for which itis intended; and,
Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The herein-described wick-adjuster, comprising the combination with a lamp-reservoir or other vessel of a cylindrical wick-tube 6, the inner diameter of the upper end of which is greater than the diameter of the lower portion, said tube being provided with a rectangular oblong slot or opening 7, a verticallymovable wick-carrying tube 10, mounted in said tube 6, said wick-carrying tube being composed of spring metal and being opened at one side, tubular keepers 12 secured to the opposite side thereof and which projects through the slot or opening 7, a handle secured to said tubular keepers, said handle consisting of a spring-yoke 13, the central portion of which is provided with a ring or loop 14, and the ends of the sides of the yoke 9 13 being bent inwardly at 15, and passed through the said keeper 12, said wick-carrying tube being supported by the tube 10, and the inner diameter of the said tube 10, being the same as that of the lower portion of the said tube 6, substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have'sigued my name, in presence of the subscribing witnesses, this 22d day of April, 1897.
ELMER DAYTON TUTHILL.
