Description

IO MODEL 'PATENTBD MAR. 31, 1903 11. DRIEHAUS.
TOOL HOLDER.
APPLICATION mm) mm. 26, 1902.
f ve/ziw U NITED STATES HENRY DRIEHAUS, OE HENDRICKS, PENNSYLVANIA.
TOOL-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 723,848, dated March 31, 1903.
Application filed August 26, 1902.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY DRIEHAUS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hendricks, in the county of Montgomery and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tool-Holders; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enableothers skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use. the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The object of my invention is to provide an implement which combines several tools into one.
A further object of my invention is to provide a novel means of utilizing the handle of the pliers to form reamers, sc1'ew-setters,nailpunches, the.
With these objects in view my invention consists in the arrangement and construction of my pliers and handle.
My invention also consists in certain other novel features of construction and in combination of parts, which will be first full-y described and afterward specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my invention. Fig. 2 is an elevation of the end of one ofthe handles. Fig. 3 is an edge View of the top of the pliers. Fig. 4 is a detail View of the locking-piece. Fig. 5 is a top plan of the pliers.
Fig. 6 is a horizontal section of the lower end of leg 4.
Like numerals of reference indicate the same parts throughout the several figures, in which- 1 indicates the pliers formed of the jaws 2 and 3, having handles 4 and 5. Said jaws are pivoted at 6.
7 indicates wire-cutters on each side of the pivot 6.
A hammer-head 8 isformed on the jaw 2, and a riveting-point 9 is formed on the jaw 3.- The inner side of the jaw 3 is grooved or serrated, forming a wrench 10.
The jaws 2 and 3 meet at their ends, forming cutting-pliers 11. The jaw 2, however,
is provided with a raised portion 12, which Serial No. 121,137. (No model.)
extends beyond the cutting edge of jaw 2 and into the jaw 3. Said extension forms a wall 13 and tapers to the points 14 and 15, between Which is formed a notch 16. The jaw 3 is also raised at 17 and is cut away to conform to the jaw 2.
On the handle 5 I forma screw-driver 18, and the lower portion of the handle 4 is hollow and provided with a slot 19 on the inner side of said handle. A tool. 20 is provided with a locking-piece 21, securely fastened to said tool by means of the pin 22. Said locking-piece 21 is provided with a cam-shank 23, through which the pin 22 passes, and is also provided with a lug 24.
Having thus described the several parts of my invention, its operation is as follows: It is frequently desired to draw nails with -pliers, and it is always extremelydifficult to get the edges of the pliers under the head of a nail driven in the wood. The flat surface of the ordinary pliers makes it difficult to get them below the surface of the wood in order to get under the head of a nail. constructed my pliers with raised portions, one of said portions extending beyond the cutting edges of the pliers and tapering to points, so that this projection will straddle the nail. By reason of the raised position of this portion it can be readily buried in the wood, and by reason of the extended position of the portion it can straddle the nail before the cutting edge of the jaw comes in contact with the wood. This project-ing feature of the raised portion is verymaterial for the foregoing reason. It furthermore forms a side Wall for the on tting-pliers, thereby-absolutely preventing an object from slipping past said wall while being gripped by the cutting-pliers.
The handle 4, as before described, is designed to carry a removable or detachable tool. Said tool is inserted in the handle while the lockingpiece is in the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3, as the camshank 23 will pass into the slot 19 only while in this position. When the tool has been inserted to the desired point, the locking-piece is turned parallel with the handle, the lug 24 springing down into the slot- 19, while the cam-shank 23 firmly engages the sides of the slot 19, thereby securely locking the tool in position.
I have therefore 1. A tool having one of its handles formed hollow and provided with a slot, an implement adapted to be inserted in said hollow handle, and a cam locking-piece carried on said implement to lock the same with said handle.
2. A tool having one of its handles formed hollow, an implement adapted to be inserted in said hollow handle, a cam locking-piece adapted to lock said tool to said handle and means on said can] locking-piece of engaging said handle to hold said locking-piece in a locked position.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HENRY DRIEHAUS.
