GARBAGE VAVULT OR RECEPTACLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 723,318, dated March 24, A1i. 903.
` Application filed December 2,1902. Serial No. 133,572. (N0 model.)
To all-whom it' may concern.- p
Be it knownthat I, EDWAnD L. SCHIEFER, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis, in the State. of Missouri, have invent- `5 ed newand useful Improvements in Garbage Vaults or Receptacles, of which the following is a specication. This invention relates to garbage-vaults, and more particularly tho a metallicl vault adapted to be secured 'to a fence or wall or in the wall of'an outbuilding and made accessibleby an outer doorway to the garbage-collector, who may pass in an adjacent alley.
The object of my invention is toprovide a .garbage-vault which is simple in construction, strong and durable, and is convenient and effective in meeting the needs of the public.
A special object of my invention is to provide a vault which shall be safe and altogether sanitary, having means for disinfect-` ing and deodorizing any noxious4 gases which may arise from the contained garbage, so as to prevent theescape of all bad odors and gases into the atmosphere.
The matter constituting my invention herein will be dened in the claims.
Iwill now describeithe details of construction of my improved vault by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents a vertical longitudinal Fig. 2 represents a front end `elevation showingl the delivery-door with itsself-closing hinges and spring-latch. Fig. 3 represents a detail view in elevation of-,the sanitary vault or chamber, showing'the reiufectant and deodorizer. .lFig. 4 represents a longitudinal sectional detail showing .the disinfectant-pan partly withdrawn from its receiver. Fig. 5 represents a detail View, on enlarged scale, showing the construction of the lid-casing frame 15. Fig. 6 represents a detail view of one corner of the cover.
`The garbage-vault 1 is constructed of galvanized iron or other suitable heavy sheet metaL'though it may be made of wood lined with sheet metal. It is preferably made of galvanized Viron and at the delivery end is pro- 5o vided lwith outwardly-extending flanges 2,
bymeans of which and suitable bolts or 'riva )fris 5 it is secured to the `fence ,3 orto the wall of an outbuilding, wherever it will be most convenient and accessible to the collector of garbage, To the delivery end is secured the door-frame by means ci bolts or rivets l The doonfrance is provided at its inner edges with an inset or jainb 8, adapted to receive the door 7, which is connected with the frame by means of self-closing'hingiss i7". These hinges are of peculiar constructioiii and of such a nature that when the 'door has been swung open they will autoniaticaliy swing it forward. and close it upon its seater jamb 8. To the door-frame t are secured the lugs 7b, having curved outer surfaces and inclined upper edges, upon which rest the outer ends of the lugs Tecn the deer. A long rod or pintle '7d passes through both sets of lugs for hinging the door tothe frame. 'Vihen the door is swung open, the lugs 7 ou the door ride up on the inclined edges of the lugs 7", carrying the door upward as it is opened. by gravity slide down the inclined upper edges of the 'lug 7b, and thus automatically `close upon its seat 8. Near the front edge of the door is pivotally connected a springlatch 9, which is held in pcsition by a keeper 10, which 4permits the latch to be raised and lowered. To the latch. 9 is secured a fiat spring l1, which bears againstthe upper part of the keeper, so as to press 'the latch downward in order that it may be caused 'to eu gage with the catch 12 upon the dooi-franie for latching and holding the door closed. The ,outer end of the latch 9 is provided with a knob 9a for raising it by hand out et the catch 12. By means of the self-closing hinges 7a 'and the spring-fastening devices abovede scribed the door will always be certainly' closed when released by the garbage-collector or other attendant. `1
.The garbage-vault is made long enough to r'eceivea depository' drawer orpau of any desired shape and also.to contain at the top a def postory-opening 13 and a sanitary chamber 23. .At the depository-opening 13 the metal of the top platelet is cnt so that there shall be formed a iiange 16 on the four sides, which is turned up vertically and is embraced all around by a continuous strip or `collar 17, bent double and secured by rivets or solder to the bent-up ilange 16, as shewn in Figs. 1J
When the door is released, it will
