DEVICE FOR REGORING SHOES.

SPECIFICATION forming part of 'Letters Patent N 0. 723,086, dated March 17, 1903.

To all whom, it may concern:

Be it known that I, NATHEN S. WA EFIELD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Devices for Hegoring Shoes, of which the followingis a speciisrfully described in this specification and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming a. part thereof, in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of-my device.

The body of my device comprises a back plate 1, bearing two side plates 2, adj ustably attached to the plate 1 by studs 3, which engagediagonal slots 4 in the plates2 and have enlarged heads 3 to; prevent their-withdrawal. A series of apertures5 are formed in each of the plates and are arranged in a line parallel to the slots 4. The upper 'corners 6 of the back plate 1 are turned over to a form catches which engage the apertures 5.

"By this arrangement the distance between the plates 2 may be adjusted for gores of different widths. Three rounded notches 7 are formed in the outer edge 8 of each of the plates2, one notch near each of the ex: tremes and the other half-way between the two. Downwardly-curved needles or hooks 9 are mounted Within the lower and the intermediate notches 7, while levers 10, having upturned needle-pointed arms 11, are fulcrumed on pins 12, located adjacent to the upper notches'7. Catches 13 are formed on the upper ends of the plates 2 and serve to engage the long arms of the levers 10 to hold them against upward movement.

In operation the old gores are ripped out of a gaiter 14 and the widthof my device adjusted by disengaging the catcher 6 from the apertures 5 to correspond to the width of the old gores. The hooks 9 are then ongaged in the lining of the gaiter 14 and levers 10 are disengaged from the catches l3 and the long arms thrown up to lower the needle-points 11 to engage the lining of the gaiter, after which the levers 10 are locked in place by the catches 13. p

I do not wish to be limited as to details of construction, as these may be modified in man y particulars without departing from the spirit of my invention.

Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. In a device for regoring gaiters, the combination of a form having two diverging sides, means for adjusting said form transversely, whereby said diverging sides are moved parallel to themselves, and hooks mounted on the said diverging sides and constructed to e11- gage the top of a gaiter, substantially as described.

2. In a device of the class described, the combination of a back plate bearing studs, side plates provided with slots engaging said studs, whereby said side plates are free to be moved parallel to themselves and a transverse adjustment accomplished, and hooks mounted on said side plates and located to engage the edges of the linings of a gaiter-top, substantially as described.

3. In a device of the class described, the combination of a form the shape of a gaitergore, hooks mounted on the sides of said'form and constructed to engage a gaiter-top, and

levers mounted on the sides of said form and having hooked arms disposed oppositely from said hooks-to engage the top of a gaiter, substantially as described.

4. A device for regoring gaiters, comprising an expansible form approximating the shape of a gaiter-gore, said form having rounded notches formed in its sides, and

downwardly-curved needles mounted adjacent to said notches and designed to engage and hold the gaiter-top in place while a new gore is being inserted, substantially as described. i

5. In a device for regoring gaiters, the combination of a plate the shape of a gaiter-gore, hooks mounted on the sides of said plate to serve to engage the edge of the gaiter-top, levers mounted on said form and having hooked arms disposed oppositely from said hooks, and designed to engage the gaiter-top, and means for securing said levers against movement after being inserted in the gaiter-top, substantially as described.

6. In adevice for regoring gaiters, the combination of side plates each having a plurality of parallel slotsztherein, and a back plate bearing studs engaging said slots, and means for adjnstably clamping said side plates against movement, substantially as described.

7. In a device for regoring gait-ers, a plate substantially the shape of a gaiter-gore and having rounded notches in its diverging sides, and needles mounted adjacent to said notches and extending substantially parallel to the edges of said plate, substantially as described.
