HELPIE 'FFIHLIN- BT11 W HTTDE'NE HS Patented Nov. 7, 1939 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 2 Claims.
This invention relates to improvements in shoe attachments and has particular reference to a creeper.
L The principal object of this invention is to produce a detachable creeper or spiked arrangement which may be attached to the sole of a shoe when desired.
A further object is to produce a device of this character which is simple in construction, lightweight, and readily adjustable to shoes of different widths.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same,
Fig. 1 is a top plan view of my device showing the lever inlocked position;
Fig, 2 abottom plan view of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 Ba side elevationof Fig. 1;; and
Fig. 4 illustrates the manner in which the device may be attached to the sole of a shoe.
It often occurs that a person encountering a slippery condition, as, for instance, on dry grass,
slippery rocks, ice, and the like, is liable to fall unless some means is provided for preventing slippage. It has been common practice to employ hob nails, as well as. edge nails in the soles of shoes; but this arrangement does not permit the user to remove'the nails from the soles when there is no use for the same. It is also true that some golfers desire to have hobs in the bottom oftheir shoes and,consequent1y, have to wear a different pair of shoes on the links than for street wear.
Applicant has, therefore, devised a simple creeper arrangement which may be quickly attached and detached from the shoe.
In the accompanying drawing wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 5 designates a top plate having a slideway 6 in which a slide l is adjustably held by screws'a extending 45 into the plate 5. The plate 5 also has a hooked extremity 9 which turns upwardly and is adapted to engage the edge of the sole of the shoe, as
illustrated in Fig. 4. Mounted upon the slide 1 is a clamping member I I, which is loosely mounted so as to be moved through the action of the cam i2 formed on the end of the lever l3. A bottom plate I4 is resiliently mounted on the 5 top plate 5 and is held spaced therefrom by rubber wedges i6. Mounted upon the bottom of the plate M are hobs I 7. These hobs may be of the removable type if desired.
As a result of this construction, when the device is adjusted by means of the screws 8 to approximately the width of the sole of the shoe, and with the lever It in the downward dotted line position, the device may be placed upon the sole of the shoe so that the hooked extremity 9 and the clamping member l i contact the edges of the sole. Then by swinging the lever E3 to the full line position, the camming effect thereof will draw these parts together and securely attach the de vice to the sole of a shoe. 20
It will thus be seen that my device will accomplish all the objects above set forth.
It is to be understood that the form of my invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as a preferred example of the same and that various changes relative to the material, size, shape and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. A dismountable creeper for shoes including a top plate and a bottom plate resiliently held one to the other, hobs carried by said bottom plate, and an adjustable clamping means carried by said top plate, whereby said creeper may be attached to the sole of a shoe. 7
2. In a device of the character described, a top plate having a groove formed therein, a slider adjustably secured in said groove, a hooked extremity carried by said plate, a clamping mem- V 40 ber mounted on said slider and coasting with said hooked extremity to engage the sole of a shoe, a cam for moving said clamping member toward said hooked extremity, and a bottom plate resiliently secured to said top plate, said bottom plate having hobs positioned therein.
HELMER FARLIN.
