GROUND BRAKE FOR ROLLER SKATES Filed Feb. 24, 1948 Fig.
Lea H. Rice INVENTOR.
Patented Sept. 4, 1951 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE V V 2,566,747 GROUND BRAKE FOR ROLLER SKATES Leo H. Rice, Council Bluffs Iowa Application February 24, 1948; Serial No. 10,492
skates whereby to facilitate .the quick starting and stopping movements of a skater by tilting the toe of the skateldownwardly.
'An' important object of theinvention is to provide a. brake attachment of this character which may be easily and quickly mounted in position on a conventional type of roller skate without necessitating any changes or alterations in the construction thereof.
A still further object is to provide a device of this character of simple and practical construction, which is eflicient and reliable in use, relatively inexpensive to manufacture and otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.
Other objects and advantages reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevational view;
Figure 2 is a bottom plan view;
Figure 3 is a transverse sectional view taken substantially on the line 33 of Figure 2;
Figure 4 is a perspective view of the attaching plate or the brakeblock; and,
Figure 5 is a fragmentary longitudinal sectional view taken substantially on the line 5--5 of Figure 3.
Referring now to the drawing in detail wherein for the purpose of illustration I have disclosed a preferred embodiment of the invention, the numeral 5 designates the sole plate of a conventional roller skate to which the front wheel truck 6 is secured by a bolt or screw 1. A brace 8 extends from the truck forwardly thereof to a brace socket 8a at the under side of the sole plate to permit limited movement of the truck and brace when the skater is turning.
The present invention comprises a brakeblock attaching plate 9 of elongated form which is positioned under the sole plate 5 forwardly of the truck 6 and having its rear end curved downwardly as shown at ill a predetermined degree and formed with an opening II to receive the bolt or screw 1. A longitudinally extending slot 12 is formed in plate 9 forwardly of its downwardly curved rear end portion for receiving the brace 8 and brace socket 8a of the wheel truck to prevent swinging of the plate toward either side of the skate.
5 Claims. (Cl. 28011.2)
i A rubber block I3 is recessed as at M in its upper surface to receive the front end of plate 9,
the block having ametal .plate l5 embedded therein for threaded engagement by screws I6 threaded through openings IT in the front end of plate 9 and through the upper portion of block l3 as shown in Figure 3 of the drawing.
The bottom surface of block l3 forwardly of its transverse center line [8 is inclined upwardly as shown at H! and rearwardly of the center line l8 the lower surface of the block is also inclined upwardly as shown at 20. In the operation of the device the plate 9 is secured to block l3 by the screws 16 and the plate 9 is secured to the under side of sole plate 5 of a skate as indicated in Figures 1 and 2 of the drawing So that the block 13 will lie under the sole plate 5 at its toe portion and in front of the front wheel truck 6.
The forwardly inclined portion I9 at the under side of the block is cut at an angle to bear flatly on the floor or ground when the toe of the skate is tilted downwardly whereby to serve as a brake for the skate or to facilitate the starting motion of a skater from a standing position.
In view of the foregoing description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, it is believed that a clear understanding of the device will be quite apparent to those skilled in this art. A more detailed description is accordingly deemed unnecessary.
It is to be understood, however, that even though there is herein shown and described a preferred embodiment of the invention the same is susceptible to certain changes fully comprehended by the spirit of the invention as herein described and the scope of the appended claims.
Having described the invention, what is claimed asnew is:
1. A brake attachment for roller skates having a front wheel truck provided with a screw threaded fastener and an upwardly inclined brace for the truck, said brake attachment comprising a plate having a pair of openings for receiving the fastener and the brace to hold the plate at the under side of a skate, and a brake block secured to the under side of said plate.
2. A brake attachment for roller skates having a front wheel. truck provided with a screw threaded fastener and an upwardly inclined brace for the truck, said "brake attachment comprising a plate having a-pair of openings forreceiving the fastener and the brace to hold the plate at the under side of a skate, said plate having a front end portion positioned under the toe of ing the first named plate to hold the block from turning movement, and means securing the first and second named plates to each other to hold the block at the under side of the first named plate.
4. A brake attachment for roller skates having a front wheel truck provided with a screw threaded fastener and an upwardly inclined brace for the truck, said brake attachment comprising'a plate having a pair of openings for receiv- -'ing-the fastener and the brace to hold the plate at the under side of a skate said plate extending forwardly under the skate, -a brake block "having a recess in its top to receive'said'pla te and said block also having'an attaching 'plate'emb'edded therein, and fasteners'securing the first and sec- 4 end plates to each other tohold the first named plate in the recess of the block and to hold the block at the under side of the first named plate, said block having bevelled front and rear edges at its under side.
5. The combination with a roller skate having a front wheel truck and a forwardly inclined brace for the truck, of a brake attachment com ,prisingan elongated plate positioned under the skate forwardly 'of the wheel truck and attached at its rear end to the truck, said plate having an opening receiving the brace to hold the plate against lateral swinging movement, and a brake block secured to the under side of the plate at its front end,
