COMBINED SIDESTICK AND QUOIN.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Iatent No. 722,753, dated March 17, 1903.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, WILLIAM SAMUE RHODES and WI LI M JACKSON TRUMP, citizens of the United States, residing at Lincoln, in the county of Lancaster and State of Nebraska, have made certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Sidestick and Quoin, of which the following is a specification.

It is the object of our invention to provide an improvement in that class of printers furniture employed for locking up forms and which comprise a sidestick or foot-stick and quoins or wedges that are adjustable thereon.

We have devised an improved construction, arrangement,a nd combination of parts,whereby certain advantages are attained, as hereinafter set forth.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is mainly a plan view of our invention, portions .of the quoins being broken away and a portion of a chase and form being indicated in dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of our improved sidestick. Fig. 3 is a crosssection on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1.

The sidestick A, which may be also a footstick, has the usual straight edge and on the opposite side two reversed inclines a a and at a central point two lateral projections B, which are parallel-and arranged at right angles to the longitudinal axis. These projec tions B are in the nature of short flat bars or plates formed integrally with the body of the sidestick A and provided with an open slot 2, having parallel sides and extending outward from the sidestick proper. The said projections are separated, as required, to receive between them a collar C, (see Fig. 1,) which is formed integrally with two cylindrical and alined screws C. These screws are threaded in opposite directions and are rigidly connected with the collar 0, being preferably constructed integrally therewith. The quoins or wedges D, which are adapted to work on the reversed inclines aof the sidestick A, are provided at their inner and wider ends with threaded sockets adapted to receive the said screws 0. As seen in side view, the quoins D have practically the form of right-angled triangles, their outer sides being parallel to the same plane, while their inner ones are parallel to the inclines of the side- Serial No. 97.308. stick It is apparent that when the parts are in the position shown in Fig. 1 if the collar C be rotated the quoins D will be forced far- 53 ther apart or brought nearer each other, as the case may be, and that thereby the device will be adjusted as required for locking up the formX in the chase Y. For the purpose of rotating the collar C and screw C the former is provided with a series of peripheral sockets adapted to receive a suitable lever Z. (Indicated by dotted lines.)

It will be noted that the collar Cis of such length as to fit easily between the guides B, so that there is no movement of the adjusting devices C and C longitudinally, while it- .is free to be removed or inserted by reason of the slots 2 being open at their outer ends. Thus the parts 13 not only serve to hold the ad- 'j usting device in due position both as to longitudinal and lateral movemen t,but they enable the quoin attachment as a whole to be readily applied and detached. inclines and provided at the inner ends of said inclines with the projecting lugs prov vided in their free ends with the longitudinal slots formed between the upper and lower edges of the said lugs, the adjusting-shaft projecting at its ends through said slots and provided at its middle with thecollar fitting and operating between said lugs, and the quoins having inclined faces operating along those of the sidesticks and engaged by the ends of the screw-shaft.
