To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, RAY'VV. H'rronooon, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Cody, inthecounty of Gherryand State of Nebraska, have invented a new and Improved Printers Chase-Lock-Up Device,

of which the following is a full, clear, and

fill in the space between the job and the chase, the lock-up device being so designed that it will lock the job both ways and also look it in the chase.

A more specific object of the invention is the provision of a plurality of crossing bars with slugs loosely slidable thereon, in combination with quoins or equivalent devices, whereby by means of the bars, slugs and quoins, ajob can be easily and quickly locked.

With such objects in view, and others which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention comprises various novel features of construction and arrangement of parts which will be set forth with particularity in. the following description and claims appended hereto.

In the accompanying drawing, which illustrates one embodiment of the invention and wherein similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views,

Referring to the drawing, A designates a printers chase of ordinary construction, and B the lock-up device arranged therein. The lock-up device comprises longitudinal and transverse bars 1 and 2, which are of such length as to lie within the chase, and on these bars are freely movable slugs 3 each having a rectangular opening 4 so that the Specification of Letters Patent.

slugs can be strung on the bars, which are also rectangular 1n crossscct1on. The openlng 4 in each slug 1s arranged at one s1de of the center line, so that both the bars 1 and 2,

are arranged in different planes. The slugs can be placed on the bars in such a manner that the corresponding faces of the slugs on both sets of bars can be flush. At the end of each bar is a quoin 5 of usual construction, and there are enough slugs placed on each bar that the slug at one end of a bar will bear against the chase and a slug at the opposite end will bear against the quoin. Thus the slugs on a bar will lock against the chase and against the slugs on the crossing bars directly at the point of crossing, and the bars simply serve to support the slugs before the device is locked up. The bars can be adjusted to any desired position, it being merely necessary to slide the slugs along the bars to obtain the proper points of crossing of the bars.

With a lock-up device of this character it is clear that a job can be locked in both directions as well as locked in the chase, and no furniture is required.

From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, the advantages of the construction and method of operation will be readily understood by those skilled in the art to which the invention appertains, and while I have described the principle of operation, together with the device which I now consider to be the best embodiment thereof, I desire to have it understood that the device shown is merely illustrative and that such changes may be made when desired as fall within the scope of the appended claims.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:

1. The combination of a chase with a lock-up device therein comprising two parallel longitudinal supports, two parallel transverse supports and three groups of slugs mounted on each support, each group being to one side of the point of crossing of the supports, and means for clamping each support and slugs thereonin the chase.

3. The combination of a chase, with a lock-up device therein, said device comprising a plurality of crossing bars, slugs slidably mounted on the bars for clamping the job in the chase, and means at the end of each bar for clamping the slugs thereon in position, the bar having its ends free from the chase and the clamping means, the bars being of angular cross-section and the slugs having correspondingly shaped openings whereby the slugs are freely slidable on the 15 bars and are prevented from turning thereon.

4. The combination of a chase, with a lock-up device therein, said device c0mprising a plurality of crossing bars, slugs slidably mounted on the bars for clamping the job in the chase, and means at the end of each bar for clamping the slugs thereon in position, the bar having its ends free from the chase and the clamping means'locking device, the bars being of angular cross-section and the slugs having correspondingly shaped openings whereby the slugs are freely slidable on the bars and are prevented from turning thereon, the opening in each slug being at one side of the center thereof. 7
