Be it known that I, HARRY H. PORTER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, county of Los -Angeles, and State `of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Register Plu s for Mounted Color-Cuts, of which the following is a specification.,

In color plate work after the iirst color is printed it frequently happens that lthe weather changes, sometimes it is more moist and the paper fulls up or increases slightly in size. At other times it is drier y-and the paper shrinks slightly. In both casesit throws the color plate in the form out of register with the first print and the plate must be changed inthe form till it registers. This change has been made heretofore by unlocking the form and changing leads and copper spacers until obtained. Then in locking the form again it frequently happened that the locking means had more pressure on one side than the other and the cut would still not register, and the forms had to be unlocked and a new adjustment made. With my improved register plug this uncertainty can be avoided as the color outs can beshifted without unlocking the form, thereby saving time, as the distance the cut will have to be moved is accurately determined by the turning of a screw bolt forming a part of the plug.

My invention relates to means for accurately securing color cuts in the form, so that the same can be removed and a new color cut inserted therein and held in register at the proper place without any danger of making a mistake; and the Object thereof is to provide a sim lev and efficient Vdevice which can be quickly operated for that I accomplish this object-by the device described herein and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which;

12 isthe color plate which is secured in the furniture by means of my improved register plug 13. This register plug consists of the following parts. `The body A is preferably of a shape in which the faces except one are parallelograms, and is provided with a transverse bore B therethrough in which is longitudinally movable the bearingbar C. This bar is provided with a head D, the face of which is preferably knurled. In one side of the bearing bar is a spline E, and in the body is a semi-circular channel F or splineeway into which the spline is received to prevent the bar from rotating inthe body. The bar is provided with a central bore H, which is interiorly threaded. In this bore is received a screwthreaded bolt I which has a head J in which are cut channels K. The bore Bof thebody is enlarged at one end sufficiently to chamber the head J of the bolt I, and one side ofthe body is out away as best shown in Fig. 7,' so that the operating lever L can be inserted in the slots K, so that the screw I may be rotated. 'The bar C is placed in the bore of the body` from the side opposite the cut away portion. Bolt I is then screwed into the bearing bar C, cap plate M is then secured upon the body, register plug is ready for use.'

' In the operation of my device the color plate is placed within the furniture after the same is secured in the `chase in the usual manner. i At the sides of the color plate and near each end thereof are placed register are like register plugs as shown 1n Fig. 1.` It will be observed that by the use of lever L the bearing bars can be rotated in either direction, that when rotated in one direction they will firmly bind the color plate in the furniture, and when rotated in the reverse direction they will quickly release the same so that the plate can be removed. It will also be observed that by releasing the bearing on one side and end that when a new color plate is put in the furniture that by tightening up the bars that were released the new color plate will be secured in register in the exact position of the former color plate. It will also be observed that as these register plugs are all constructed exactly alike the operator has means to change the position of any new color plate that he puts in, be-

These slots and the cut away portion of the body adjacent to the head of the screw are preferably so arranged that tWo slots are susceptible of entry by the operating lever, whereby the bearing bar can be moved a certain pre-determined distance, Which is determined by the distances it is desired to shift the color plate when a new plate is put in the furniture.

Having described my invention what I claim is l. A register plug comprising a body having a hole surrounded by body material eX- tending transversely therethrough its entire thickness; a non-revoluble bearing bar longitudinally movable in the hole in said body, said bar having a head exterior the body; revoluble means Within said body and bar to move said bar; and means to hold said revoluble means in said. body.

A register plug comprising a body having a transverse opening therethrough, said opening being enh rged at one end, and. said body being cut away at one side adjacent to 1 said opening, said body having a spline-way in one side thereof a bearing bar having a spline in one side thereof, said bar and. spline being adapted. to fit into and move longitudinally in the opening of said body, bearing bar having a central screw threaded. bore; a screw threaded. bolt in said bore, said bolt having a head provided with transverse channels; and a cap plate secured to said body and covering said bolt.
