The invention contemp ates the provision of shortmetallie roller sectionswhich may be placed on the stock spindle /or removed therefrom to obtain the desired length/of roller, the composition for thesurface ofthe roller being molded upon. said metallic sections. In this way the roller may be readily adjusted in length to corespdnd with the dimensions of the blocks/ of type to be inked thus savingink which wouldbe wasted i the roller were too long.
Another object is to provide a roller with spaced sections of inking surface to fit blocks of type separated by blank spaces or margins whereby ink is further conserved by not aving idle portions `of roller surface to be inked. Other objects will appear as the description roceeds.
The invention W' l-be first hereinafter described in connection with the accompanying drawings, wh ch constitute p art of this speciiication, and then more specifically defined in the claims at the end of the description.

A roller of the desired length is designed to bc built. up on a stock spindle l which is fol-mcd with a longitudinal groove 2 in its surface from end to end to receive correspondingly shaped inwardly extending key lugs 3 on the vmetallic roller sections 4 of which five are illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2. l It will be understood that these sections 4 may be made of any suitable length and that as many of them placed on the spindle as dcsired'before molding the composite lnki ing material 5 thereon as shown in F ig. 2. The outer surface of each of the sections 4; is roughened, as at (i, Figs. l, 2 and 3, to rc tain the inking surface material 5 thereon.
Before the surface material is molded on the sections 4, they are locked together on the spindle by end collars 7 each ot' which has an inwardly extending key lug 8 and a set screw 9 adapted to engage the base of the longitudinal groove 2 for holding it in place. It' a roller is found to be too long for a given piece of work, the 'surface composition 5 may be out in line with any one of the meeting ends ofthe sections 4, and the sections thus separated may be removed from the spindle after the adjacent end collar has been taken oii. The sections of the l roller having the inking surface thereon,
which vare thus removed, may be stored away for future use, and when desired may be apart on the spindle 1 by a-sleeve4 l2, and
correspond to the Width of the blocks of type in each piece of work.
Having tlms described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is 1. An inking roller comprising` a spindle. a. plurality7 ot' metallic roller sections detachably mounted so as to meet end to end` on said spindle 'and Jforming a continuous cylindrical surface of constant diameter from end'to end of said sections, and an inking surface ol composite material molded directly on said sections-and across the meeting ends thereof, whereby said' inking surface material may be cut through in line with any of said meeting ends of the sections for the purpose specilied.
