WEI-INER A. KOCH, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALI- ABRASIVE EXPANSION REAMEB.
Application filed March 15,'-1921.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, JOHN A. Bnn'rnaxn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California; have invented new and usefulImprovements in Abrasive Expansion Reamers, of which the following is a specification.
It is the object of this invention to provide-an abrasive rea-mer having means for readily expanding the circumference defined by the abrasive materlal.
It is a still further object of the invention to provide areainer having a readily expandible and contract-able guide slee e which carries detachable plugs of abrasive material. v
The invention will be readily understood from the following description of the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a reamer constructed in accordance with the invention.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a transverse section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
The reamer includes a mandrel which is formed with a tapering portion 1 and end projections 2 and .3, one of which is threaded as shown at 4 in order to receive a usual coupling. while the other end projection 2 is preferably provided with a flattened surface portion 5 in order that it may be readily engaged bya wrench.
A guide sleeve 6 is received upon the tapering portion 1 of the entire surface of this guide sleeve forms a tapering bore co-operating with the taper of the mandrel. The guide sleeve is of somewhat resilient material and is arrange for expansion and contraction by providing series of slots 7 and 8 extending lengthwise of the guide sleeve from the respective ends thereof. The slots terminate short of the opposite ends of the guide sleeve and are preferably provided with circular enlargements 9 at their inner ends. By this arrangement it will be seen that the guide sleeve may be readily expanded and contracted upon the mandrel by adjusting the sleeve longitudinally of the tapering portion of the mandrel so as to cause engagemandrel, and the d the mandrel to fully guide sleeve.
Serial No. 452,617.
ment between the co-operating tapering surfaces of the mandrel and guide sleeve.
In order to prevent rotary the guide sleeve upon the mandrel while permitting of longitudinal adjustment of the sleeve, keys 10 are pre the mandrel and are received within either slots 7 or 8 of the guide sleeve. In order to longitudinally shift the guide sleeve, the latter is preferably provided with an inturned flange 11 at its larger end and received around the end projection 3 of the mandrel. A nut 12 is threaded on to the end project-ion 3 of the mandrel so as to impinge against flange 11 and thus provide forlongitudinal adjustment of the guide sleeve. The nut 12 may be provided with suitable apertures 13 adapted to be engaged by a tool for rotating the nut.
The guide sleeve of the reamer carries a plurality of plugs of abrasive material which are preferably readily detachable from the guide sleeve and replaceable when worn. For this purpose a plurality of apertures 15 is provided in the guidesleeves, and plugs 16 of suitable abrasive materlal are received in these apertures so as to ject radially beyond the guide sleeve. The plugs are preferably provided with enlargements 17 at their inner ends which are received within at the inner ends of apertures 15 so as to hol the plugs against radial displacement and permit of the ready removal and renewal of the same when the guide sleeve is removed from the mandrel.
In order to readily remove the expandible guide sleeve from the tapering mandrel after the completion of a piece of work and when the sleeve has been forced down tightly upon expand the sleeve, a nut 19 is preferably threaded upon the large end of the tapering mandrel projects somewhat beyond the end of the It will thus be seen that by screwing nut 19 onto the mandrel, the guide sleeve may be forced from the same.
Itjwill thus be seen that I have provided an extremely simple but efficient abrasive reamer wherein a guide sleeve carrying the abrasive material is adapted to be readily expanded as the reaming continues. Various changes may be made without movement of prothe countersunk portions 18.
which I departing from the spirit of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed is:
1. A reamer including a mandrel, an expandible guide sleeve mounted thereon, said sleeve being provided with a plurality of apertures, plugs of abrasive material removably mounted in said apertures so as to project radially beyond the sleeve, and means for expanding and contracting said sleeve.
2. A reamer including a mandrel, a guide sleeve mounted thereon and having longitudinal slots spaced circumierelltially to permit of uniform expansion and contraction of said sleeve, keys carried by said mandrel and received in said slots for locking the latter against rotatlonal movement on the mandrel, abrasive plugs mounted in the sleeve between said-slots, and means for expanding and contracting said sleeve.
3. A reamer comprising a. mandrel, an expansible sleeve mounted thereon and having openings therein. and abrasive plugs fitted within said openings, and means for locking the plugs against displacement from the openings.
l. A reamer comprising a mandrel, an expansible sleeve-mounted thereon and having openings formed therein, plugs fitted within said openings, and flanges carried by the plugs and adapted to be interposed between the mandrel and sleeve for locking the plugs within the openings.
lln testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
