Description

No. 765,560. PATENTED JULY 19, 1904. W. v. UROGKETT.
QUOIN. APPLIO'ATION PILEUJUNE 3, 1903.
NO MODEL.
@y v %Ys Patented JuIy 19, 1904.
-UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM VERNON OROOKETT, OF CORSIOANA, TEXAS.
QUOIN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N o. 765,560, dated July 19, 1904.
Application iiled .Tune 3,1903. Serial No. 159,894. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern/.-
Bc it known that I, WILLIAM VERNON OROCKET'I, acitizen of the United States, and a resident of Oorsicana, in the county of Navarro and State of Texas, have invented a new and Improved Quoin, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements in quoins for locking type-forms; and the object is to provide bearing-plates in connection with the wedges so connected that by the sliding movement of the wedges the plates will be spread apart without lengthwise movement, thus preventing any movement or displacement of the type, as sometimes happens when a wedge engages directly therewith.
I will describe a quoin embodying my invention and then point out the novel features in the appended claim.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the iigures.
Figure 1 is a plan view of a quoin embodying my invention, showing the same in formlocking position. Fig. 2 is an end view thereof. Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3 3 of Fig. l, and Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the bearing-plates. y
Referring to the drawings, 5 6 indicate the wedges, each having a heel portion '7 at one end, the heel portion of one wedge having sliding engagement with the inclined surface of the other wedge, and to prevent a lateral movement of the wedges one relatively to the other the heelI portion of each wedge is provided with a channel to receive a rib on the inclined portion of the other wedge. On their inclined or adjacent surfaces the wedges are provided with teeth 8, designed to be engaged by a suitable tool for moving the wedges lengthwise in opposite directions. The tool may consist of a key having its shank provided with longitudinal corrugations or teeth.
Engaging with the outer surfaces of the wedges 5 6 are the bearing- plates 9 and 10,
designed to move outward with relation to each other without sliding movement. The plate 10 as here shown is provided at its opposite sides with inwardly-turned arms 11, and the plate 9 is provided with. guides consisting of inwardly-turned arms 12, which engage against the inner sides of the arms 11, and on these arms 12 are keeper-plates 13, which are turned over the outer surfaces of said arms 11. By this arrangement the plates may be readily moved apart, but will be prevented from longitudinal movement one with relation to the other, and to prevent a complete separation of the plates the ends of the arms 11 are provided with outwardly-extended lugs 14 for engaging with the portions 13 of the arms 12. To limit the outward movement of the wedges with relation to the plates, the said plates are Aprovided at the ends with lugs 15, the lug of one plate being at the end opposite the lug of the other plate.
In operation after placing the form in the chase the quoin is to be placed therein in the usual manner, then the wedges are to be operated by a suitable tool, as before described, which will cause the spreading apart of the plates to clamp the type.
Having thus described my invention, Iclaim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A quoin comprising wedges, plates engaging the outer sides of the wedges, arms eX- tended inward at opposite sides of the plates, the arms of one plate being slidable on the arms of the other plate, outwardly-extended stop-lugs on the arms of one plate, and keeperplates on the arms of the other plate for engaging with said lugs, the said keeper-plates engaging against the outer sides of the arms having the lugs.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses. l
WILLIAM VERNON CROCKETT. Witnesses:
D. Gr. GRAN'IIIAM, J. H. RICE.
