Description
PATENTBD MAR. .3, 1903. D. MoPHERSON. VAGINAL SYRINGE.
I APPLICATION FILED OUT. 16, 1902.
im MODEL.
DONALD MOPI-IERSON, OF PALMYRA, NEW YORK.
VAGlNAL SYRINGE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 722,180, dated March 3, 1903.
Application filed October 16.19Q2. Serial No. 127,525. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, DONALD MoPHERsoN, of Palmyra, in the county of WVayne and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Vaginal Syringes, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and shown in the accompanying drawings.
My invention is a device for flushing and cleansing the vagina, involving the use of a syringe, the same being hereinafter fully described, and more particularly pointed out in the claim.
This invention is designed for use by a person or patient while lying down, the instrument being designed more particularly to be used in connection with a fountain-syringe, though a piston-syringe or abulb-syringe may be advantageously employed with it if found more convenient.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device as in use. Fig. 2 is an end view seen as indicated by arrow 2 in Fig. 1, the syringe-tube being transversely sectioned on the dotted line at the point of the arrow. Fig. 3 is an end view of the device seen as indicated by arrow 3 in Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a transverse section on the dotted line a 4: in Fig. 6. Fig. 5 is a transverse section on the dotted line 5 5 in Fig. 6. Fig. 6 is a central longitudinal section of the body and other parts of the device, taken on the dotted line 6 6 in Fig. 3. Fig. '7 shows the syringe-tube detached, partly in central longitudinal section.
In the drawings, A is a tapered body, of light wood, india-rubber, or other suitable material, substantially o'f frusto-conical form, designed to enter and temporarily close the entrance into the vagina, the said body A being oval in cross-section, as shown. The body A is formed with a longitudinal bore a, open ing out at both ends of the body, having its axis parallel with but at one side of the axis of the body, in which to receive and hold a hollow hard rubber tip or tube B, substantially of the kind used with ordinary syringes. This tube is formed with a flange 0, Fig. 7, outside of or beyond which the tube terminates in a tapered end or nipple b, with enlarged part or bead at the extreme end to receive and hold an ordinary india-rubber pipe or hose 0, as shown, leading from an elevated fountain in the usual manner. The tube B is longer than the body A, with both ends projecting and provided with an annular stopper or ring of pliable packing material d, next the flange c, to stop and close the outer open end of the bore a, as shown in Fig. 6. i
e is a curved longitudinal'branch passage through the bodyA beneath the bore a, opening out at both ends of the body, having its outer end in part closed or stopped by a hollow nipple f, formed at its terminus to receive a discharge hose or pipe D, as clearly shown in Fig. 6. Thus formed and arranged there is a continuous passage for water or other liquid down through the duct C, through the tube B well into the vagina, and thence out through the passage 6 and the discharge duct or hose D, as shown.
In employing this device the user is desirably in a prostrate position, as lying in bed, and after the body A, with its projecting injecting-tube, is properly inserted, as stated, Water or other liquid from the fountain is allowed to flow downward through the hose 0, which, entering the extreme parts of the vagina with force through the perforated end of the tube B, flushes and cleanses the parts, the liquid after performing this service flowing downward and outward through the hose D into some suitable receptacle beneath.
By means of this device, used in connection with an elevated fountain, a forceful stream of Water or other liquid may be permitted to flow continuously for a period of time into the vagina and then outward, as stated and for the purpose set forth.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a device of the character described, a body portion in a single element of substantially frusto-conical form, oval in cross-section and formed with longitudinal bore opening out at both ends of the body with its axis parallel to but at one side of the body and with a curved longitudinal branch passage through said body beneath the bore, and opening out at one end of the body and at its other end opening out at the end of the body and merging in the said bore Within the body whereby a continuous passage is formed through the body from end to end and thence back through said curved branch, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand, this 10th day of October, 1902, in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
DONALD MoPI-IERSON.
Witnesses:
GEORGE W. GERARD, I PHILLIP LANGON.
