PAD FOR HERNIAL BELTS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 721,963, dated March 3, 1903.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FLORENTIN MATUCHET, engineer, a citizen of the Republic of France, and a resident of 161 Rue de Bercy, Paris, France, have invented new and useful Improvements in Pads for Hernial Belts, which are fully set forth in the following specification.
This invention relates to pads for hernial belts, and has for its object to provide means the application of which to the inflected parts will quickly and efiectively cure them, so as to restore them to their normal and healthy condition.
For this purpose the invention consists, essentially, of a rubber pad having on its inner side. a concave curvature corresponding to the shape of the palm of the human hand and on its outer side a convex curvature in which is arranged a plate, to which are fixed buttons for attaching the pad to a belt.
The invention consists, further, of certain details which will be described hereinafter and finally pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 shows a front view of a hernial belt provided with my improved pads. Fig. 2 is a front view of one of the pads. Fig. 3 is a rear view of a pad shown as detached from the belt. Fig. at is a side View of the improved pad, and Fig. 5 is a vertical transverse section of Fig. 3, taken on line 5 5.

Referring to the drawings, 0. represents my improved pad, which is made of rubber, having the shape, form, and volume of the-palm of the human hand. To facilitate themanufacture of these pads, they are made of two shells, one of which is molded so as to have a concave curvature and to conform to the shape of the palm of the human hand and the other molded to have a convex curvature. Each shell is of the same size and has the same shape at its widest part or periphery, so that when these shells are joined by the aid of a suitable rubber-cement they form a pad havinga cavity or hollow interior. The front or concave shell a is made of somewhat softer rubber than the back or convex shell a so that when the pad is placed on the abdomen, with the front shell touching the same, the front shell conforms to the various movements of the abdomen. In the convex back a metal plate I) is embedded, to which are attached buttons 0 for mounting the pads on a belt 9. The belt 9 is also provided with a back-pad h, made of soft material according to any well-known manner, for supporting the belt on the back of the wearer, the pad h, however, forming no part of my invention. The number and relative position of the buttons will depend on the nature of the belt,whether it is to be used for inguinal or other forms of hernia.
The application of this pad having the form of the palm of the human hand affords an effective cure for the diseased parts, inasmuch as it maintains the injured intestines in their natural or normal position without permitting them to shift away from the pad. Thus the inflected parts held in their proper place in the abdomen will soon be elfectively and permanently cured.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In a hernial truss, a hollow rubber pad having the form and volume of the palm of the human hand, a plate in said pad and buttons on said plate for attaching the pad to a belt, substantially as set forth;
2. In a pad for a hernial truss, the combination, of a shell having the shape of the palm of the human hand and of concave curvature, a second shell of convex curvature and joined to said first shell so as to form a hollow pad, a plate embedded in the second shell, and buttons on said plate for attaching the pad to a belt, substantially as set forth.
