Description

@uiten time @anni ffire;
H. y C. DORMA'N, OF NORTH BRID(irllWATER,4 MASSACHUSETTS.
Letters Patent No. 72,175, dated December 17, 1867. i
IMPROVBD WASHING-MACHINE.
@up ,zlgehnle return' tu in time tttttts @anni iminmkug putt nf the same.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONOERN: i
Be it known that I, H. C. DORMAN, of North Bridgewater, in the county of Plymouth, and Stateof Mas-` sachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Washing-Machines; andIdo hereby declare that the following is a. full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon..
The nature of myinvention consists in a peculiar device, by which a washing-tub is so arranged undattached y to its frame and working parts,` that it may receive a revolving and reciprocating motion, and also in the peculiarity of the holding-disk.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed t'o describe its construction and use. In the drawingsi Figure 1 is a. perspective view of my improved washing-machine.
Figure 2 is a vertical section of the same.
Figure 3 is an elevation of the same.
Figure 4 is a plan of the holding-disk.
I irst construct a frame, B B' B" 13"', in which a tub, S, is suspended on a shaft, Y, iig. 1, also a wheel, W, on a shaft, the tub and wheel being connected by abend, Z, figs. 2 and 3, so that, by causing thclwbeel W to revolve by operating the handle G G', iigs. 1, 2, and 3, the tub S will revolve. Upon the bottom of the tub S, in a wheel, W', a small knob, K, is fixed, which, as the tub revolves, comes in Contact with one of the springs H H', fig. 1, and checks its motion. These sp1-ings H H', being but slightly elastic, yield but little to the momentum of the tub, and in their reaction send the tub smartly back, thus materially'essisting the operator in giving the tub its reciprocating motion. E' is a cross-bar, free to slide up and down in the slot in the piece BB",ig. 1. The holding-disk T is attached to the cross-bar E' by the standards X X', ig.1. VV', figs. 1 and 4, are two slots, cut into the holding-disk T, the object of these slots being to receive and hold a part of the garment which is being washed. By pulling a part of the garment through these slots V V', the remainder will be securely held while being operated upon. V
To use my improved machine, the article to be wuslibd is secured to the under side of the holding-disk T,
by pulling parts through the slots V V', the disk being removed from the tub. TheV tub S, being partly lled y with water, the disk containing the article to bc washed is replaced, und.the tub made to oscillate rapidly, by means of the handle G and the action of the springs 1I H'. i i
Having thus described my invention, I will now proceed to set forth my claim.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination 4and arrangement of the wheels W W', '.lie tub S, the knob K, with the springs H H', substantially as described and for the purpose set forth. V
' 2. The holding-disk T, when slotted at V V', in combination with the reciprocatiiigtub S, substantially as i i described and for the purpose set forth.
` H. C. DRMAN.
