Description

@Hitlers gisting @anni @frn JAMES LAMB, OF HUBBARDSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
Letters Patent No. 57,125,dated July 23, 1867.
IMPROYED WASHING MACHINE.
TO ALL PERSONS TO WHOM THESE PRESENTS SHALL COME: A
Be it known that I, JAMES LAMB, of Hnbbardston, in the county of Worcester, and Stat-e of Massachusetts, have invented a-n improved Machine for Washing Clothes; and dohereby declare the same to be fully described in the following specification, and represented in theaccompanying drawings, of Which- Figure l is avvertical section of it, and
Figure 2 a perspective view of its shaft and the cross and arms and handle thereof.
In such drawings, A denotes u. circular tub provided with u cover, B. Through the said cover, and so as to extend above and below it, a shaft, C, is carried, it being free to revolve in the cover, and being supported thereby. On the upper end of the shaft a. handle or bra-ke, D, is fixed at right angles to the shaft. On' the lower end or foot of the shaft is a. cross, E, formed of two wooden bars a a, arranged at right angles` to one another :xt their middles, and there fixed to the shaft. From or near each end of the cross a pin, E, projects vertically, or thereabouts, and nearly down to the bottom of the tub, when the cover is in place o`n the top of such tub. Y
To operate the machine, when water, soap, and clothes are placed within-the tub, a person has only to lay hold of the handle with both hands, and move it so as to impart to the shaft `andcross `a reciprocating rotary motion. This will cause the clothes to be moved within the tub` and in the meanwhile to be washed.
This machine, though simple in construction, is verlvY eilici'ent in its Aope-ration'.
I claim as my invention- The said washing machine, as composed of the tub A, the cover B, the shaft C, the handle D, the cross E, and the pins F, combined and arranged in manner and so as to operate substantially as described.
JAMES LAMB.
