No. 719,622. PATENTED FEB. a, 1.903.,
I. A. SHARP. MATCH BOX FOR MINERS LAMPS.
APPLICATION FILED SEPT. 20, 1902. N0 MODEL.
T? aunm/ WITNESSES.-
UNlTED STATES PATENT OFFICE- ISAAC ALVAH SHARP, OF MONTEZUMA, INDIANA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO GEORGE P. KEMP, OF MONTEZUMA, INDIANA.
MATCH-BOX FOR MINERS LAMPS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 719,622, dated February 3, 1903.
Application filed September 20, 1902. Serial No. 124,239. (No model.)
To all whont it may concern:
Be it known that I, IsAAo ALVAH SHARP, a citizen of the United States, residing at Montezuma, in the county of Parke, State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Match -Boxes for Miners Lamps, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to a match-box for miners lamps, and particularly to such a box mounted directly upon the body of the lamp.
The invention has for an object to provide a construction of match-box adapted to conform to the contour of the lamp and pivotally mounted at the rear thereof, so that the matches contained therein are protected against dampness and also against the heat and oil from the lamp, While they are readily accessible for use in connection with the lamp.
Other and further objects and advantages of the invention will be hereinafter set forth, and the novel features thereof defined by the appended claims.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective of the box applied to an ordinary miners lamp; Fig. 2, a vertical section of the same, and Fig. 3 a horizontal section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2.
Like letters of reference refer to like parts in the several figuresof the drawings.
The letter A designates a miners lamp, which may be of any ordinary construction for instance, the usual form, having a fillingopening closed by a cap A and the wick-tube A The body of this lamp is also provided with the usual retaining-hook A for engagement with the miners cap or hat or for hanging the lamp in any desired place. This hook may be disposed in any desired position upon the lamp, but is here shown as at the back directly opposite the spout, and when in such position the match-box B is provided with a suitable indented or recessed portion B, adapted to pass around the body of the hook, as shown. This match-box is disposed at the back of the lamp, so as to remove it from all heat and flame adjacent to the wick-spout, and is-formed to fit the contour of the outer periphery of the lampfor instance, of a curved cross-section, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3.
It is also provided with a deep flanged cover B which effectually prevents the entrance of any oil into the box when the lamp is being filled and providesa protection againstdampness affecting matches when the lamp is not in use. The box is pivotally mounted at one side of the rear of the lamp by means of a hinged joint B preferably extended from the body by means of the bail B, as shown in Fig. 3, and at the opposite side is provided with a spring latch-plate B having an aperture at its free end adapted to pass over a pin B, carried by the body of the lamp. It will be noticed that the recess or depression B increases in depth from the lower portion of the box upward, so as to accommodatethe stem of the hook, which lies therein, and
the cover B is similarly recessed, so as to be held in position by contact with the shank of the hook, thus forming two pockets or receptacles within the box, which may be used for containing different materials, if so desired, while if the hook be located otherwise than as here shown this depression may be omitted and the box formed in one continuous receptacle. In the present application of the box it will beseen that the curved back thereof bears against the front of the miners cap or the support to which the lamp is attached, so as to be thoroughly protected against loss of the contents thereof, while the box may be swung clear of the hook to one side and the cover removed for obtaining ready access to the matches therein. As is well known, the clothing worn by the miners is usually damp, so that matches cannot be carried in pockets, and the frequent necessity of stooping or lying down causes the accidental loss of the match-boX-from the pocket. Furthermore, a box located as herein shown is protected from dampness by the body of the lamp and also from heat and flame, while the cover therefor prevents the entrance of oil into the box while the lamp is being filled, so that the invention produces a simple, efficient, and economical construction of. match-box particularly adapted for use in connection with minors lamps.
It will be obvious that changes may be made in the details of constrnctionand configuration and of the character of the lamp to which the box is applied without departing from the spirit of the invention as defined by the appended claims.
Having described my invention and set forth its merits, What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a match-box for miners lamps, the
combination with a lamp, of a box conforming to the exterior periphery of the lamp, a pivot for said box at one side of the rear of the lamp, a spring latch-plate adapted to engage a pin at the opposite side of the lamp, a hook at the rear of the lamp having its shank extended through a depression formed in said box, and a cover for said box adapted to contact with the shank of said hook; substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
