This also permits convenient access to the parts for any desired purpose.
In the operation of the device, when the sections D are in the position shown in Figs. l and 2 and full lines, Fig. 3, it' the rocker C be turned in either direction it will operate through the pitman G to adj ust the sections D to the full-line position shown in Fig. 4, as will be understood by a comparison of Figs. 3 and 4. To ease or cushion the stopping of the sections D in both opened and closed positions, we provide a buffer H, preterably of spring metal, having the wings H and H2 for engagement by a stud I on one of the crank-arms B, as shown in Fig. 3, the said buffer being arranged for engagement by the stud I in both positions of the sections D, as will be understood from the drawings and the foregoing description. In operation, it will be noticed, the euspidor is self dumping or draining and is always closed, as shown in Fig. l, except when positively operated to the open position, (shown in Fig. 4,) from which position it automatically closes when the pressure of the foot is released from the rocker.
Manifestly the size of the euspidor may be varied as desired. It also can be operated from one side by the use of one rocker C or from both sides, as shown, and one or both sections may be rocked, or the receptacle may comprise but one section, as may be desired.
The lids, Wings, trunnions, and cranks can all be cast in one piece. f
As best shown in Figs. 4 and 6, the main chamber may have a chute or extension J to pass through the ceiling under the floor of the coach Whenever desired.
As shown in Fig. 3, both ends of the buiferspring are arranged to be engaged by the crank-arm. When the euspidor is to be used as a self or automatic closer, one arm H might be omitted. It will be understood that the chute J may be made in different shapes for convenience in making connections with pipes in offices, &c.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure byLetters Patent, is-
l. The euspidor herein described, comprising in connection with asuitable framing, the receptacle composed of the opposite sections each having a lid and a bottom wing, and provided with trunnions at the juncture of said wings, said trunnions having crank-arms, the
rockers at the opposite sides of the said receptacle and between the pivots of the sections and arranged for operation by the foot, the pitmen connecting said rockers with the 0pposite sections of the receptacle, the buffer by which to ease or cushion the stopping of the receptacle in both adjustments, and the stud on the crank-arm of one of the receptacle-sections to engage said buifer, substantially as set forth.
2. Acuspidorhavingareceptacle composed of two opposite sections each having a lid and a bottom wing and pivoted at the juncture of said wings, and means whereby said sections may be opened and closed, substantially as set forth.
3. In a euspidor substantially as described, the receptacle comprising the section having a bottom wing and a lid connected therewith, and pivoted at the juncture of said lid and wing, and means whereby the said section may be operated, substantially as set forth.
4. A euspidor comprising the receptaclesection having a bottom Wing and a lid pivoted at the juncture of said lid and Wing and provided with a crank-arm, the rocker arranged for operation by the foot, and the pitman connecting said rocker with the crankarm of the receptacle-section, substantially as set forth.
5. The combination of the framing having a main chamber and the side chambers at the opposite sides of the main chamber, and the caps for the side chambers provided with openings for the rockers, the rockers operating in the side chambers, the receptacle having its sections operating in the main chamber and provided at the ends of said chamber with trunnions extending into the side chambers and having crank-arms operating in the side chambers at the ends thereof, and the pitmen connecting said crank-arms with the rockers, substantially as set forth.
6. A euspidor comprising two sections combined to form the receptacle and each composed of a lid and bottom wings and pivoted whereby they may be adjusted to opened or closed position, and foot-operated means for actuating said sections, substantially as set forth.
7. A euspidor comprising a receptacle having a section formed with a bottom wing and a lid at approximately right angles to each other and pivoted at the juncture of said lid and wing, and foot-operated means by which said section may be rocked to dierent positions, substantially as set forth.
