PERCIVAL TURNER HOUSTON, OF LONDON, ENGLAND.
POKING-HOLE FOR SUCTION GAS-PRODUCERS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 27, 1914.
Application filed July 2, 1914. Serial No. 848,660.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, PEROIVAL TURNER IIoUsToN, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing in London, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in or Relating to Poking-Holes for Suction Gas-Producers and like Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to self-contained fittings for the poking holes of gas pro- 'ducers and the like apparatus, and of the kind comprising a lid or cover operatively connected with mechanism which is pivotally mounted on a stand or body part secured to the producer over a poking hole, and which is manipulated for lifting the cover from off the mouth of the body part and for replacing it on the mouth where it is retained under the action of gravity.
It consists in improvements in the opening and closing mechanism of the cover which may be flanged or dished as hereinafter described.
The invention will be described with ref erence to the accompanying drawing in which- Figures 1, 2 and 3 are respectively, an elevation, section and plan of one form of the improved poke hole fitting; Figs. l and 5 are an elevation and section of a modified form of fitting and Figs. 6 and 7 similar views of a further modification.
In the several views, similar parts have corresponding letters applied.
In Figs. 1, 4, and 6 a weighted handle is omitted.
In the form of the fitting shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3 the body, usually a casting, is in the form of a tube at having a flange a for attachment to the gas producer. The cover?) is dished to fit over and make a gas tight joint with the machined end of the tube. On the outside of the cover are two bosses 72, through which passes an eccentric pin device 0, links d from the ends of this pin are attached at their other ends to pins or studs 6 projecting from the body of the fitting. To the middle of the length of the eccentric pin device is fitted a handle 7 having a large knob or weight g on the fore end. Assuming the fitting to be closed, an upward movement of the handle f, by turning the eccentric pin, lifts the cover from its seat; the movement of the handle being continued a projection c from the eccentric pin device engages with a stop 5 on the cover, tilting it clear of the hole in the fitting. The cover and its fittings can now be thrown back as indicated in broken lines in Fig. 2, against some suitable stops such as 64 leaving a clear passage for the poker. One side link may be cranked to form a toe piece or handle d. When this is the case, closing is effected by pressure or a pull on this toe piece, causing the cover to rise above the hole, the heavy knobbed handle in falling turns the eccentric and thereby jams and locks the cover on its seat. Under the action of the weight g the cover becomes self closing and locking when raised above the mouth of the fitting. In lieu of the toe piece a suitably shaped handle it may be mounted on the eccentric pin for returning the cover from an open to a closing position. Such a construction is shown in Figs. 4 and 5.
In the modified form of the fitting as shown in Figs. 6 and 7, the side links (Z may consist of a single forging or casting with an extension or projection d to form a handle for returning the cover to its seat.
The poking holes may be either circular, square or any section desired.
Having thus described my invention and the best means I know for carrying the same into practical effect, I claim 1. A self-contained fitting for poking holes of gas producers and the like, comprising in combination a body part or stand attached at one end to the producer, a cover for closing the other end or mouth of the stand, means mounted on the cover for raising and lowering the cover with respect to the mouth of the stand, members pivotally mounted on the stand and connected with said raising and lowering means, and means for rocking said members about their pivots whereby the cover is shifted from or returned to a raised position above the mouth of the stand.
2. A self-contained fitting for poking holes of gas producers and the like, comprising in combination a body part or stand attached at one end to the producer, a flanged cover adapted to fit over and thereby close the other end of the stand, means mounted on the cover for raising and lowering the cover with respect to the mouth of the stand, members pivotally mounted on the stand and connected with said raising and lowering means, and means for rocking said members about their pivots whereby the cover is shifted from or returned to a raised position about the mouth of the stand. y
8. In a self-contained fitting for poking holes of gas producers and the like, comprising a tubular body part or stand attached at one end to the producer and a cover for closing the other end of said stand, a pin eccentrically journaled in bearings on the cover, links pivotally connected at one end with the extremities of the pin and at the other end with bosses or studs projecting laterally from the stand, means for turning the pin on its bearings whereby the cover is raised or lowered relatively to the mouth of the stand, and means for rocking the links and cover about studs whereby the cover may be moved to and from a raised position above the said mouth.
4. In a self-contained fitting for poking holes of gas producers and the like, comprising a tubular body part or stand attached 5 at one end to the producer and a cover for Copies of this patent may be obtained f0 closing the other end of said stand, a pin eccentrically journaled in bearings on the cover, links pivotally connected at one end with the extremities of the pin and at the other end with bosses or studs projecting laterally from the stand, means for turning the pin on its bearings whereby the cover is raised or lowered relatively to the mouth of the stand, and means for rocking the links and cover about studs whereby the cover maybe moved to and from a raised position above the said mouth, said latter means comprising a handle member mounted on said pin.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses. I V
