Description

(No Model.) J. MAYNE.
RAILROAD SIGNAL.
Patented Ma iNVENTOR 1 TTORNEYSY.
UNITED STATES PATENT @FFlCE,
JOHlR MAYNE, OF ATCHISON, KANSAS.
RA! LROAD-SIGNAL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 295,264, dated March 18, 1884.
Application filed June 13, 1883.
1'0 all whom it may concern:
Be itknownthat I, JOHN :MAYNE, of Atchison, in the county of Atchison and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Railroad-Signals, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention pertains to an improvement in railroad-signais; and it consists of the combination and arrangement of parts, substantial ly as hereinafter fully setl'orth and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved railroad-signal, and Fig. 2 is a detail view.
A represents the depot building in front of which the signal is to be shown.
B is a tube attached upon the front of the buildingin a horizontal position for supporting the signaling device.
On the outer end of the arm B is a box, a, fitted with a vertical shaft, b, that carries the signal-board c at its lower end, the upper end of the shaft being formed to receive a lantern.
Within the building is a vertical rock-shaft, d, supported in suitable bearings, and provided with a crank-arm, e, that is connected by a rod, f, to an arm on the signal-shaft b.
(No model.)
At the lower end of the rod dis a handle, for use in turning the shaft, and the lower support of the rod (1 is made in the form of a plate, 72, that is provided with notches for receiving the handle, so as to retain the signal in either position in which it may be turned. By this construction the signal can be readily operated from the inside of the building, and the connections being all positive, the operation will be accurate.
The connecting-rod f may be fitted with a slide where it passes through the side of the building, in order to keep the opening closed for the exclusion of rain or snow.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Pat-- ent In a railroadsignal, the combination, with the support B, having an upright box, a, at its outer end, and the vertical shaft d, bearing in a notched plate, h, at its lower end, and having a pivoted handle, 9, of the shaft b,passing through and supported upon the box a, and carrying the board 0 and a lamp, and the rod f, connected to the shaft b and to a crank, e, of the shaft cl, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
J OHN MAYNE.
