Description

Oct- 13, 1925. 1,557,129 0. WILSON v SWITCH STAND Filed Feb. 1925 m;imma w INt EN me (91 Nev Wilson ATTOE/VEY Patented Get. 1
OLIVER WILSON, COVINGTON, KENTUCKY.
swrron STAND.
Application filed February 9, 1925 Serial at. 7,839.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OLIVER WILSON, a citizen of the United ington, in the county of Kenton and State 1 'States, residing at Cov- 5 of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Switch Stands, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to means for throwingthe switch stand into open and closed positions, respectively, 7 The object of my invention is to provide simple, convenient,
efficient, economical, easy and durable means for operating the switch stand in a confined space and to throw the switch points into .sition. .Another object either open or closed pofmy invention is the construction of such a device thatwill remain automatically locked'from the rail and that the device, when the throwing lever is in either of its horizontal positionswi-ll render unnecessary the use of -locks or latches. -Locks or latchesmust be used on practically a all types of switc .use;
h stands now in 1 general .1 Another object of my invention is to provide a switch stand in which the number of the parts are reduced to a minimum.
I further object of myinventionis to pro- *vide a switch stand which will be so constructed as to operate under all conditions of weather and which will never be clogged by snow or ice;
, My invention consists in the parts and in the construction, comblnation, location and arrangement of p and claimed;
In the drawings arts, as herein set forth Fig. 1 is aside view of my invention;
Fig.2 is a verti cal cross section taken on a plane corresponding to line 22 ofFig. 1;
Fig.3 is a base and cap;
perspective view omitting the Fig. 4 is a plan view of Fig. '3 showing the mechanism wi the left;
th the throwing lever to Fig. 5 is a plan view of Fig. 3
5 the hand throwin shown in Fig. 1;
Y Fig. 6 is a similar view to Fig. 4 showing g lever to the right, as v Fig. 7 isa detailed view of the swivel block; and
Fig. 8 is a side elevation; thereof. 'Inthe embodiment: of myinvention, as illustrated, and which shows a preferred .construction, I provide a switch standll, as
SlIOWH III-Fl'g. 1,],which isadapted to be supported on the usual ties 2 and secured thereon by the usual method, as for instance,
by spikes 3. For convenience in assembling the working parts within the housing 4, said housing is made of twohalves comprising base 5 and cap 6. As shown in Fig. 1, base 5' and cap 6 (after. having the working parts assembled therein) are firmly held together by bolts 7 and nuts 8. Hand throwing lever 9 is secured to the outer end 10 of crank shaft. 11 bypins 12 and13. :Grank shaft 11 is journaled in bushing 14 which is inserted in hole 15 of boss '16, the upper half of said boss being formed by cap 6 and the lower half ofsaid-boss being formed by base 5.
.Ribs17 and 18, respectively, of ,cap 6 and base 5am for the purpose of strengthening boss 16. Crank shaft 11, substantially as shown, is provided with reduced end 19 which receives roller 20, said roller being rotatably secured o-n'said reduced end 19 by washer 21 and spring. cotter, 22. Roller .is received in opening 23 of swivel block 24, as clearly shown in Fig. 3 and the movement therein will be described hereafter. Swivel block 24 has journals 24 which are pivotally received and supported by arm 25 integral .withthe upper swivel block bracket 27 and arm 26 integral with the lower swivel block bracket 28. Saidupper andlowerswivel block brackets 27 and 28 have holes 29 and 30, respectively, in their vertical portions 31 and 32 for the purpose of receiving vertical signal operating switch shaft .33. V Said brackets 27 and 28 are securely iixed to said shaft 33 by pins 34 and 35. In addition to pins34 and 35 the brackets 27 and 28, re
spectively, are protected from movement on shaft 33 by dovetail connection 36. The
swivel block brackets 27 and 28 are intermediate cap 6 and base 5 and are pivotally retainedin this relation to said cap and said base by shaft 33 which extends through bearing 37 in said cap 6 and bearing 38 in base 5 in which the extended shank 39 of lower swivel block bracket 28 is journaled. The upper end of shaft 33 may be provided with the usual target and lantern support (not shown) of the present and well known construction. The. extended shank 39 of lower swivel block bracket 28 has dovetail connection 40 with stud 41, said stud being integral with conneeting rod arr-n 42,,and' said arm 42 is retained on the lower end of shaft 33 by washer 43 and nut 44 which is screwed onto threads 45 of shaft 33. The connecting rod 46 (shown in dotted lines in Figs. 3, 4, 5 and 6, respectively,) is connected to the switch points in the usual manner.
In Figs. 1 and 6 I' have shown the hand throwing lever in position to the right which we will assume' closes the switch points. WVhen in this condition and with my con struction it is practically impossible to move the switch points by vibration of the railsor in any way except by shifting manually the hand throwing lever. The lower surface of the swivel block adjacent the crank shaft is preferably beveled downwardly toward said crank shaft in order to furnish as wide a hearing as possible for the roller which engages the elongated slot. This results in easier operation than otherwise.
My novel switch operating means are very simple, easily operated and effici'ent at all times and under an conditions of weather.
To open. the switch merely throw hand throwing lever from the position illustrated in. Figs. '1 and '6' until it assumes the position, indicated by, Fig. 4. Figs. 2, 3' and 5.
show the switch in a neutral position.
When the hand throwing lever is in the position, shown in Fig, 4, the. switch points are opened. To close the switch points raise hand throwing lever, which in turn, raises crank shaft 11 and roller 20; Said roller operating in opening 23 of swivel block 24 moves said swivel block and the journals 24 of said swivel block being pivoted-in the arms 25 and 2 6 of the upper andl'ower swivel block brackets 27 and 28, respectively, impart motion to shaft 33, which in turn, impart motion to connecting rod arm 42. The connectingrod (shown in dotted lines) being pivotal'ly connected to said connecting rod arm, imparts motion to the switch points, thereby closing or opening them according to the position of the hand throwing lever,
Advantages of my invention are that it dispenses with all gearing and the life of the device ismuch longer than otherwise;
also it dispenses with the necessity of any latch to hold the throwing lever from rebounding out of position when the switch points are in closed position, by the vibrastructure in which my invention may be incorporated. It is understood that my invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction as herein explained and that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention, as herein disclosed", can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of'the invention.
WVhat- I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

In switch operating means, a housing, a verticalshaft journaled therein, a connecting'rod arm fixed to said shaft, a switch point connecting rod pivotally attached to said arm and adapted to be operatively connected to the switch points, a yoke fixed to said shaft, a swivel block having an elongated slot oropening therein and pivotally mounted in said yoke, a pivotally mounted crank shaft having one end engaging the walls of said opening, and a switch throwing arm mounted on the other end of said crank shaft. Y
c 2. In switch operating means,- aghousing, a vertical shaft journaled therein, an arm fixed to said verticalshaft, a switch point connecting rod pivoted to said arm, a yoke fixed to said vertical shaft, a swivel block mounted in said yoke and having a vertical slot therein, a crank shaft suitably journaled and having one end mounted in said swivel block, and a switch throwing lever mounted on the other end of said crank shaft whereby said arm may be moved in reverse directions to operate said switch points.
